The Genetic Landscape of Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy with Spike-and-Wave Activation in Sleep

In 2022 the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) defined developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with spike-and-wave activation in sleep (DEE-SWAS) and Epileptic Encephalopathy with Spike-and-Wave Activation in Sleep (EE-SWAS) as a spectrum of conditions that are characterized by various combinations of cognitive, language, behavioral and motor regression associated with marked spike-and-wave activation in sleep. This terminology replaces syndromes previously named Epileptic Encephalopathy with Continuous Spike-and-Wave in Sleep (EE-CSWS), Electrical Status Epilepticus in Sleep (ESES), Atypical Benign Partial Epilepsy (pseudo-Lennox syndrome) and Penelope syndrome.
