The calcification of cartilage matrix is a naturally occurring process in endochondral bone formation1. The articular cartilage of mature and healthy individuals remains non-calcified. However, a thin layer of calcified cartilage connecting the deep zone of articular cartilage with the subchondral bone is present in healthy joints. This dense mineralized layer is formed during puberty when vascular invasion and bone growth stops2, 3.
