Ultrasound measurement of decreased vastus medialis quality as a marker for increased structural abnormalities in early knee osteoarthritis: a case-control study

Purpose: The proper management for KOA prior to the occurrence of major structural damage may allow restoration of joint homeostasis. Identification of sensitive markers of the earlier stage would expand opportunities for effective disease managements. As muscle quality is associated with muscle strength, fatty infiltration (i.e., poor quality) in quadriceps lead to initiation of KOA via loss of shock absorption and loading distribution. While fatty infiltration of the quadriceps muscles is seen in patients with KOA, it is unclear if the degree of infiltration is associated with a decline in structural integrity of the knee in patients with early KOA.
