Centering Diverse Perspectives in Women ’s Health Nursing Courses

I am an associate professor and the midwifery program director at Fairfield University ’s Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, where I have been teaching for the past decade. Through deepening my own diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work, I have purposefully incorporated more diverse perspectives, particularly Black women’s experiences, into the women’s health and mi dwifery courses I teach. My “aha” moment related to the necessity of this work occurred a few years ago. I was facilitating a group discussion about maternal mortality rates in the United States, and the disparities Black women face being 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complic ations.
