Strategies to Improve Emergency Department Care of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patient

Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients (DHH) encounter health inequities as they enter the health care system.1-5 Patients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing experience increased emergency department length of stay due to deaf or hard of hearing factors.1-5 Communication is a significant barrier that DHH patients must overcome every time they enter the health care system.1-5 These miscommunications or misunderstandings between patients and their health care providers can lead to substandard care, delay in care, and long-term chronic conditions for DHH patients.
