Efficacy and Safety of Alternative Treatments for the Prevention of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections

AbstractPurpose of ReviewIn this review, we discuss the current literature available to patients and providers regarding alternative and complementary treatments for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections. These therapies include cranberry products, D-mannose, hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and D, probiotics, herbal medicine, behavioral modifications, and acupuncture.Recent FindingsNumerous non-antimicrobial as well as non-pharmacologic preventative strategies are under investigation, but studies have been largely limited to observational studies or small randomized trials. Investigations into over-the-counter nutraceuticals have raised concerns regarding product purity, contamination, and unknown interactions.SummaryThe current literature lacks sufficient evidence for a majority of these strategies to yet be a viable alternative to the current mainstay of antibiotics prophylaxis. Further investigation should target comprehensive RCTs, establish safe and standardized therapeutic dosages, and carefully document adverse effects as well as potential drug interactions.
