HIV-pre-exposure prophylaxis in HIV-negative men who have sex with men and transgender women presenting with a proctitis

Sexually transmitted proctitis is associated with HIV transmission in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW).1 2 In our clinic-based, cross-sectional study from Brighton UK, 152 MSM/TGW attended with a proctitis between January and May 2021 (gonorrhoea=69, chlamydia=74, herpes simplex virus=3, syphilis=1, Mycoplasma genitalium=0, coinfections=0) and 85 (56%, 95% CI=47.6% to 64.0%) MSM/TGW with a proctitis were using HIV HIV-PrEP (78% daily dosing). The reasons for MSM/TGW not being on HIV-PrEP included: poor access to HIV-PrEP and having a low perceived risk of HIV. All 67 MSM/TGW not previously on HIV-PrEP were offered HIV-PrEP and 47 (70%) commenced HIV-PrEP following their episode of proctitis. Table 1Men who have sex...
