Physician, Educate Thyself: The Importance of Learning About Complementary and Integrative Medicine and Nutrition in Otolaryngology Practice

The other day a patient and her adult daughter came to see me. The patient is in her 70s and had been disabled by frequent episodes of severe vertigo accompanied with hearing loss, tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe weakness necessitating hospital admission on a number of occasions. This had been going on for nearly one year, with the patient losing all of her independence as a result. She was unable to drive or be alone for fear of having another episode. Her quality of life had been demolished.
