A Week of Hard but Rewarding Work in Honduras
By Mara Levitt, MD, & Ashley Davis, MD   Honduras, a Central American country bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, is home to more than eight million people, and produces minerals, coffee, tropical fruit and sugar cane. The capital, Tegucigalpa, is divided into 18 departments; we traveled to Intibuca.   Honduras has the highest rate of homicide in the world. The water supply and sanitation varies from modernized water treatment systems to basic systems, from sewer systems to latrines and basic septic pits. A lack of maintenance leads to poor water quality, and residents’ health varies depending on whe...

Let's talk about cancer.
Three years ago at this time I was lying on the couch, watching St. Elmo's Fire with Friend Pens The Lotion S., feeling rather giddy from a combination of red wine and Vicodin. I had just had the majority of my hard palate and all of my soft palate removed due to a case of oral cancer. If you want to read the whole story, go back to September of 2010 in the archives.(St. Elmo's Fire is a good movie filled with terrible people. Skip it; that way, you won't have to wish for that two hours of your Vicodin- and red-wine-soaked life back.)Let's talk about oral cancers. There are a lot of them, some of them frightening, some of ...

HPV infection linked to poor oral health, say cancer prevention researchers
Infection with oral human papillomavirus (HPV) - a main cause of throat cancer - could be linked to poor oral health, including gum disease, according to a study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research. Researchers from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston analyzed data from the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was carried out by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some 3,439 participants were included in the data, aged between 30 and 69 years. Participants were chosen based on...

Does the Tagaway Skin Tag remover really work?
Tara’s torn up about tags…I have a skin tag on my neck and when the neckline of my blouse rubs against it,  it drives me crazy. I keep seeing this TagAway product at my local Walgreens. Is it safe and effective? The Beauty Brains respond:  Skin tags are a benign type of tumor that affect many people (particularly those who are obese, diabetic, or pregnant.) The technical term for these annoying little bumps of skin is “acrochordons.”  (Hey, aren’t those the intelligent microscopic life forms that power the “Force” in Jedi Knights?) TagAway seems like a waste TagAway is a homeo...

A Guide to Cervical Cancer Screening & HPV Vaccines
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “nearly all sexually-active men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives.” But the virus usually clears on its own, without causing any damage — and often without showing any symptoms. The HPV vaccine can prevent infection, but it’s not for everyone. We’ll tell you what you need to know about the virus and the vaccine. What are the risks from HPV? In both men and women, HPV infection can lead to warts or ...

Jennifer (via Facebook) asks…Which chemical peels are the best for acne & help getting rid/ lightening acne scars? There are so many out there, is the Obagi blue peel really worth it? Wingnuttery kills
Among the sexually transmitted infections, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV, to its friends) is among the least glamorous. Everyone knows syphilis and gonorrhea, but for some reason HPV doesn't share their celebrity. It should, because some strains of it cause a very common and highly unpleasant problem, genital warts -- or warts wherever people's parts happen to interact, and you can use your imagination. Other strains cause cancer -- cervical, genital, anal, oral and pharyngeal. In fact, HPV is basically the cause of cervical cancer. So it doesn't take a sodomite to see that a vaccine which is highly effective in preventing tra...

R&R in the FASTLANE 030
The 30th edition of our series of eminence-based eminence is here… However, this one was compiled differently to the others — I challenged over 5,000 Twitter followers to tweet me the best or most useful EM/CC journal article they had read in the past year. Then I went away and read them, and these were the ones worthy of a place in the R&R pantheon (a number of other suggestions had already been included in previous R&Rs — every man and his dog wanted to vote for the Levitan and Weingart preoxygenation paper for instance!). Thanks to all who took part! A free resource that harnesses the power of social ...

TechTool Thursday 018
TechTool review of  GenSurgCall by on Jeremy Tan on iOS  (reviewed on iPhone)  Website: – iTunes - Website GenSurgCall is a quick-reference guide, which gives a brief overview of general surgical problems.  It’s most useful for med students and very junior doctors. Design and User Interface The design is absent and the UI is all over the place.   On first glance it looks just like a very basic app with text and rows and general dullness – to be honest I almost couldn’t face looking through it.  However, it has a few surprising features in there. The UI is completely inconsistent – every page has...
