Is working at a community health center worth it when graduating with ~300k in debt
Hello, I'm an M2 and am interested in either peds or FM and I would prefer to work for the uninsured in suburban or rural community clinic setting, but I do not know anything about how financial compensation works as a doc and if that would be a viable option financially if I'm graduating with at least 300k in debt. I know NHSC is an option for paying off loans but I've heard that it is pretty particular and stringent when it comes to who qualifies and its requirements. I also don't know if... Resident Continuity Clinic vs "Real World" Outpatient
A vast majority of my colleagues go into hospital medicine upon graduating. Even those thinking of doing outpatient end up taking hospitalist jobs. My program is very inpatient heavy and the only exposure we get to primary care is our continuity clinic where we commonly see low-functioning, uninsured, uneducated, chronically co-morbid, often drug addicted patients. We get a taste of insurance company denials, mountainous levels of paperwork, and an outdated EMR (eCW). Could this lack of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone know what's going on with Mary Lou Retton?
I just read that she's very ill with some rare pneumonia. I've always been a big gymnastics fan, and this is sad news. I hope she does ok. Amazing that she's uninsured too! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cash Only Group Practice?
Are cash only no insurance group practices a thing? Ideally 1. MD/DOs only 2. MD/DO + PAs 3. MD/DO + NPs (kill me now) + Therapists If so, what would such a structure look like in terms of founder/founding partners and then younger employees or therapists added over time? Insurance based group practices make more sense in my mind as people struggle with the idea of setting up their own with billing services and what not. Also since it’s more affordable, insurance based probably fills... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Involuntary commitment question
Hello. I have a conundrum and I’m trying to figure out if I’m simply misunderstanding the issue or if I’m witnessing wrongdoing. I work in a government (US federal) hospital as an internist. We have psychiatry staff but they will only admit military patients who are actively suicidal or homicidal. They will not admit nonmilitary patients to their inpatient service for any reason. What we get very often is that an unfunded/uninsured civilian patient will be brought to the ER by the police... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I take one gap year or two gap years?
Hi, I'm a rising senior planning to apply for the next application cycle (2024-2025). I'm a bit concerned if I would have enough clinical experience to apply next cycle. By the time the application starts, I would have just around 200-250 hours volunteering as a medical assistant volunteer at a clinic that serves underrepresented/uninsured patients as just my clinical experience. I do plan to start working full-time as a medical assistant during my gap year, and I would project those hours... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

To Those of You Who Practice in the Indigent Outpatient World
I joined an outpatient clinic which despite being a setting with many indigent/uninsured patients, has extremely limited access to case management and even nursing for that matter. I also live in a vary populous state where revolving door psychiatric care is more common due funding issues. Take your guesses. Getting people linked with ACT takes upwards of six months etc. So when I joined, the plan was for me to take on the "neutral" (mixed bag) caseload of someone who'd left. Instead, I... Should associate dentists buy their own malpractice insurance even if their employer offers it?
If your practice owner or DSO offers you malpractice insurance, should you still purchase your own anyway? Here are some scenarios that I've read about: You are being sued, the owner believes you were negligent and fires you before the case is adjudicated, leaving you uninsured. If he doesn't fire you, he might sue you to recover the payment made on your behalf, which might bankrupt you. The owner allows his (and your) malpractice coverage to lapse, leaving you unknowingly... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
