Am I missing something here?
I am doing an EM rotation for over 3 wks now, and today I was talking to another med student in the ER and we both concluded that there has not been a patient that come to the ER that could not be managed by an internist. Granted is not a big trauma center, but my question is: why do we have an EM specialty? What can an EM doc do that a good internist can't? Also, there is an IM intern in the ER that does everything as far as procedures (e.g. intubating, putting central line, thoracentesis... Am I missing something here? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Getting procedure training
Hi, I'm a 3rd year IM resident at a smaller community hospital, planning to do hospitalist medicine next year. I'd also like to work at a small community hospital, and even pick up some moonlighting shifts in a small ICU where they need hospitalist coverage. I'm not getting much experience at all in a lot of standard procedures: central lines, U/S guided peripheral lines, para/thoracentesis, LPs, etc. I'm wondering about how difficult it is to get supervised experience once you're out of... Relatively relaxed rotation site vs. Long-hours, high #/variety procedures rotation site?
Hey every one, so my question is basically, A. Would you pick a relatively relaxed rotation site with a limited # of procedures that you feel like you aren't doing enough and wasting time but have decent amount of hours for yourself and etc or B. a long hour working rotation site where you can do high #/variety of procedures (like central line and thoracentesis) but feel a bit overwhelmed with # of hours worked and lack of time for yourself?
