Tetanus is an acute neuromuscular disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. Bacterial spores found in soil can enter the body through skin disruption, with subsequent onset of clinical illness ranging from 3 to 21 days (usually within 8 days). Meningitis progress lags substantially behind that of other preventable diseases
(Meningitis Research Foundation) The global disease burden of meningitis remains unacceptably high, and progress lags substantially behind that of other vaccine-preventable diseases. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Global Burden of Disease study showed that meningitis deaths reduced by just 21 percent globally between 1990-2016, whereas other preventable diseases such as measles, tetanus, and diarrhea due to rotavirus saw declines of 93 percent, 90.7 percent, and 57.9 percent, respectively, suggesting that progress in meningitis could have been substantially faster. Veruccae plantaris or plantar warts are caused by Human Papillomavirus which causes benign epidermal tumors that often have a cauliflower pattern on the foot that may be elevated or flush with the surrounding skin. Lesions may resemble calluses but the normal footprint pattern is disrupted. The lesions often have pinpoint hemorrhages that appear as black dots. In an immunocompetent individual, the lesions usually have spontaneous resolution within 2 years but the infection may spread to create additional lesions. Barriers to Receipt of Prenatal Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid, and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine Among Mothers of Infants Aged < 4 Months with Pertussis - California, 2016
In a review of California mothers of infants with pertussis in 2016, mothers who were offered tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular (Tdap) vaccination on-site during a routine prenatal visit were more likely to be vaccinated than were mothers who were referred off-site for vaccination, highlighting the need to incorporate Tdap vaccination into routine prenatal care to reduce access barriers. More Teenagers Than Ever Are Getting the HPV Vaccine, CDC Says
More teenagers than ever before are getting vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Federal guidelines now say that all children should start two-dose HPV vaccination at age 11 or 12 to protect against HPV-associated cervical, vaginal, penile, anal and throat cancers.
