Should You Delay Divorce? 3 Ways Couples Put It Off
This guest article from YourTango was written by Abby Rodman. A therapist I know once suggested that staying married is a choice you make on a daily basis. She said that every morning when you wake up and look over at your snoring spouse, you’re deciding — on some level — to stay married one more day. This isn’t a psyche-challenging exercise if you’re in a good, or good enough, marriage. It’s an autopilot decision you don’t even know you’ve made. But if you’re wondering daily whether you’re in the right marriage, this decision becomes a gut-wrenching task t...

What to do after the patient is made comfort measures only (CMO)
Discussion:  Deciding to focus only on comfort is a major transition point for patients, families and health care providers.  After making this decision, most families are not sure what comes next.  They look to health care providers to reassure them that they are doing the right thing and to ensure that their loved one does not suffer and that they are prepared for the next few days. The following questions should guide one’s action after a patient is made CMO: 1.   Are the patient’s symptoms adequately treated/prevented? A standardized comfort measures only order sheet can optimize symptom m...

Quiet is the Word, Mum
It is quiet here today. Maggie is softly snoring on the couch in her usual fashion. I have some soft tunes on the home theater. Mom just quickly called to tell me we are eating Mexican tonight. That has been the only intrusive noise in over an hour.My crack dealing neighbor is having his locks changed after his big party last weekend. Oh, the company we keep. If I we're a crackhead, then I would want keys to the crack house as well.Today was my first day to start back getting my every two week injection of Risperdal Consta which is a long acting injection for schizophrenia. This was a concession to my father after my recen...

Post Haste
I hope the comments on my last post are safe to read. I will read them soon. I showed weakness yesterday and some unscrupulous people will take advantage of that and kick you when you are down. It seems to be a throw back to our primordial predatory nature - go for the weakest wildebeest in the herd.My father has gone with Charlie to get us all some Popeye's spicy fried chicken and biscuits. I look forward to their return. I am very, very hungry. Grocery day is tomorrow and I also very much look forward to 3pm when my mother will arrive with another load of good stuff to eat. My only special request this week was Blue Pla...

Sleepy Eye
Our morning walk is completed and the breakfast dishes have been washed and put away. Second shift starts at 8am with volunteering. Maggie and I had warm cream cheese and strawberry preserve filled Danishes for breakfast. They were absolutely scrumptiously delicious with a cold glass of milk. The Danishes were soft and fresh as well. Mom is being more cognizant of sell by dates instead of grabbing the first thing she sees on the shelf.I find myself nodding off as I begin to write this post. Maggie's already back in the bed. My eyelids are as if they are tethered by lead. My head will slump forward in sleep and my obnoxiou...

Spuggies, skelfs and skives: 10 years in Scotland
Ten years ago today my sister and and I arrived in Edinburgh. My first week was spent whinging about the £1 = $2.60 exchange rate*, drooling over men in kilts on Princes Street (sadly not a regular occurrence; just rugby fans), grumbling about the snoring dude in the youth hostel, searching for work and accommodation, swooning at the sun setting over the Castle, and generally believing I could control the shape of my two-year stay through meticulous planning and to do lists. I’d hoped to write some profound reflections on this unexpectedly long Scotland stay but looking back through my 2003 mega Book of Lists I f...

Dear Diary
I hate the movie Pitch Perfect. Actually I like the movie itself, but my kids won’t stop singing the frigging songs. I have heard the songs from that movie in my sleep for months now. The latest thing that my kids have taken to doing is re-enacting the “cup” scene where Anna Kendrick sings You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone using a cup. Before school in the morning, “you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.” At night after dinner, it’s a chorus of “you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.” Without a doubt I am NOT going to miss that damn song when it...

Once Burned, Twice Shy
When you tell someone you have cancer, you can rightfully expect anywhere in a range of emotions. Anywhere from, 'oh, that's too bad, my uncle died of it'; taking a step back 'I am late for an appointment''; or, the ever thoughtful, 'how long do you have?' Occasionally you get a nice person who recognizes that you have just been giving a life changing diagnosis and treats you normally and says something like 'can I help you at all?' After dealing with that for a few decades, you can understand I can be a bit reluctant to bring up new ailments, like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. But tentatively I have talked a...

14 Truths about Romantic True Love
We know you were just assaulted with all those Valentine’s Day articles. We’re sorry about that. But it’s important to consider that “true love” is not just a theory or a figment of a writer’s imagination. Nor is it just the fictionalized stuff of romantic comedies. It can occur in day-to-day reality, too. Below are 14 ways to help make it happen. You may be surprised to learn that true love is not only attainable — it may be closer than you think. Romantic true love must be created. It does not ‘just happen.’ You become capable of creating romantic true love when you commi...

Don’t Ask Me What I Do, Instead Ask Me Who I Am
I carry a few different business cards in my purse. Because I never know what conversation I will have with a stranger at any given time. A month ago I fetched cream for my coffee at a café in South Bend, Indiana. Naturally my family didn’t know a soul in the joint. However, by the time I returned to my table, I knew some incredibly intimate (not to mention interesting) details about the daughter of the man next to me who was reaching for a napkin: his daughter is bipolar; she was anorexic as a teenage ballerina; and she’s on some of the same meds as I am. I ended up giving him a business card with everything but m...

Sleep Apnea – NOT for Men Only!
Below is another guest blog post.  One clarification I would like to make to the guest articleby Alex Smith is that the increased frequency of night-time urination seen with OSA is often due to increased urine production (for an explanation, seehttp://www.thoracicandsleep.com.au/latest-news/115-obstructive-sleep-apnoea-osa-and-urinating-at-night )Michael Rack, MD-----------------------------------------------------------------Doctors and patients alike are beginning to realize that sleep apnea in women is more common than previously thought. Men remain statistically more likely to develop obst...
