Non-invasive melanoma testing?
I'm not a dermatologist so I'm asking if any of you know if this new non-invasive melanoma testing will be adopted widely? Or would there be initial resistance to this as it would reduce the number of biopsies performed? DermTech Pigmented Lesion Assay (PLA) to Enrich Melanoma Positivity Nearly Five-Fold in Biopsied Lesions: Findings from a Large US Registry DermTech, Inc. Question about friends patient encounter
Pathologist here....So long story short. My friend went to see a derm for what she thought was a pimple near her eye. The derm did what I think was a punch biopsy on it because he thought she had lupus. My friend had no other symptoms, no other skin lesions. No labs were ordered before biopsy. Now she has a small wound from the biopsy. The ANA was ordered after the biopsy which was negative. when I heard this I was furious. Was the biopsy clinically indicated? I was thinking several... Can path-trained dermatopathologists function as dermatologists as well?
Let's say a pathologist went on to do a dermatopathology fellowship, could said dermatopathologist function as a dermatologist as well? For example, could they do their own biopsies, skin cancer screenings, get patient interaction, etc.? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

If modifier 25 is slashed, ethical implications
Anecdotally some dermatologists I've talked to would set up a separate "procedure only day." Many PCPs in my area who perform biopsies already schedule separate "procedure visits" for biopsies. This has the following ethical considerations: 1. Patients may need to take extra time off work (2 days instead of 1 day). 2. While most would (probably correctly) argue that delaying a biopsy by <5 days would have negligible risk on progression of a suspected skin cancer, would this result in an... Question on the cost of 2 skin biopsies and an immunostain
A friend of mine got a bill for the pathology charges on two skin biopsies she had recently. Seemed pretty high to me, $439 total ($272 for the two 88305 and $167 for a 88342). Does this seem high? I don’t do billing and I’m in academics so don’t see my collections but from looking online seems like Medicare rates would put the total for what she had around $250. She’s essentially self pay. I said she may want to call and see if they’d take the Medicare rate - would this be crazy? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The patient stated he has to wait 3-5 weeks to obtain a derm appointment, however is very anxious about the lesion. Do you call for a derm consult to...
