Stroke-like migraine attacks in long term survivors of high grade glioma. (P1.174)
Conclusions:Stroke-like migraine attacks are difficult to treat and the pathophysiology is unknown. With more sophisticated imaging techniques, a better understanding of this phenomenon will aid in the treatment and prophylaxis of the syndrome with a goal of improving quality of life for this small but slowly growing population.Disclosure: Dr. New has nothing to disclose. High Rate of Stenosis Progression Identified with Routine Carotid Doppler Surveillance (P5.284)
Conclusions:Among this prospective cohort of asymptomatic ≥50% carotid stenosis subjects followed with carotid Doppler imaging, high rates of carotid stenosis progression occurred despite contemporary intensive medical management, and significant TIA/stroke rates were also noted, especially among those with ≥80% stenosis. These results support further study of routine carotid Doppler surveillance in management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis.Study Supported by:Grants from the American Heart Association (15GRNT25270010), NIH (1 U54GM104938) and the VA Clinical Science Research & Development Service (CX000340)Disc...

Left ventricular wall motion abnormalities are associated with stroke recurrence
Conclusions: This study suggests that LVWMA, even when unassociated with high-risk cardioembolic sources, could be an independent predictor for stroke recurrence in patients with ischemic stroke.

Subacute decline in serum lipids precedes the occurrence of primary intracerebral hemorrhage
Conclusions: Longitudinal lipid levels differ between ICH cases and non-ICH controls, most notably for a decline in serum TC and LDL levels within 6 months preceding primary ICH, independent of statin or alcohol use. These changes in serum TC and LDL trends suggest a biological pathway that precipitates ICH occurrence. Further studies are needed to replicate these results and characterize rate of change in serum lipids as a potential biomarker of impending acute cerebral injury.

Statins and poststroke intracerebral hemorrhage: Concern but increasing reassurance
Post hoc analyses of data from randomized controlled trials can generate useful hypotheses, but need to be considered exploratory. When conducted, such evaluations should adhere to specified criteria and test for a treatment by subgroup interaction for the trial's primary endpoint.1 The best way to proceed if unexpected but potentially important outcomes occur is less clear. Concern that treatment with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (i.e., statins) might increase the risk of poststroke intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) arose from an unanticipated observation in the Stroke Prevention with Aggressive Reduction in Cholesterol Leve...

Atorvastatin Treatment Is Associated with Increased BDNF Level and Improved Functional Recovery after Atherothrombotic Stroke (S31.007)
Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that atorvastatin treatment was associated with increased BDNF level and improved functional recovery after atherothrombotic stroke. This study indicates that atorvastatin-related elevation in BDNF may promote functional recovery in stroke patients.Disclosure: Dr. Zhang has nothing to disclose. Dr. Mu has nothing to disclose. Recanalization Therapy of Acute Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion: Comparison of Carotid Endarterectomy and Endovascular Treatment (P6.068)
CONCLUSIONS: Data from this national multicenter registry showed that both CEA and EVT (including bridging therapy) represent safe and effective recanalization methods of acute ICAo. Better clinical outcome was observed in patients without intracranial occlusion and with achieved recanalization. Hepatic S1P Deficiency Reduces Atheroma Formation in LDLR-/- Mice (P5.227)
Conclusion: Hepatic S1P is a physiological modulator of plasma lipid metabolism through its regulation of VLDL secretion, especially when LDLR function is compromised. Utilizing genetic models, our data demonstrate the protective effect of hepatic S1P inhibition for reducing atheroma formation. Thus, S1P inhibitors could be potentially used to treat atherosclerosis and prevent stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Jin has nothing to disclose. Dr. Basu has nothing to disclose.

White Matter Hyperintensity in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Correlates with Higher Coated-Platelet Levels (P3.323)
Conclusions: These preliminary results suggest that increased platelet procoagulant potential and age are significant predictors for the presence of WMH in mTBI, many years after the injury. Additional studies aimed at determining the long-term impact of these findings is warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Prodan has received research support from the Veterans Affairs Office. Aggressive Medical Management for ICAD: A Comparison to the SAMMPRIS Trial (P1.174)
Conclusions:In a single center observational cohort study, we found that AMM in symptomatic ICAD yielded higher rates of recurrent stroke at 30 days when compared to the SAMMPRIS trial. This indicates that it may be more difficult to replicate the AMM and lifestyle modifications that were implemented in the SAMMPRIS trial and warrants further investigation.Disclosure: Dr. Sangha has nothing to disclose. Executive function, but not memory, associates with incident coronary heart disease and stroke
Conclusion: Lower executive function, but not memory, is associated with higher risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Lower executive function, as an independent risk indicator, might better reflect brain vascular pathologies.
