Cognitive Impairment and Structural Neuroimaging Abnormalities Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease
Conclusion: Dialysis modality showed no association with cognitive impairment, although hemodialysis patients had more severe neuroimaging abnormalities. For the whole group, white matter hyperintensity, and ventricular and hippocampal atrophy, were independently associated with global cognitive impairment in chronic kidney disease patients.Kidney Blood Press Res 2016;41:986-996

The connection between neurosciences and dialysis: a quick neurological assessment for hemodialysis nurses.
This article highlights the significance of neurovascular disease in persons who receive renal replacement therapy, and serves as an educational review for dialysis nurses to increase their neurological functional assessment skills. The outlined abbreviated neurological assessment parallels the Canadian Neurological Scale, and is based on the practice recommendations published in the RNAO Nursing Best Practice Guidelines in 2005. Frequency of and risk factors for poor cognitive performance in hemodialysis patients
Conclusions: There is a high frequency of poor cognitive performance in hemodialysis patients, primarily affecting executive function. Risk factors for worse executive function include vascular risk factors as well as vascular disease. Normal performance on the MMSE does not preclude impaired cognitive function, because individuals with MMSE score ≥24 also have a high frequency of poor cognitive performance.
