Young stroke patients are at high risk for subsequent end-stage renal disease: a population-based observational study
Conclusions Increased risk of ESRD in stroke patients is confirmed in Taiwan, and male patients between ages 25 and 44 years were at higher risk of ESRD compared with their counterparts in the general population. The clinical implication of our results is to closely monitor renal function in stroke patients, particularly those of younger age.

Chronic kidney disease and the risk of stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions Stroke risk increases linearly and additively with declining GFR and increasing albuminuria. CKD staging may also be a useful clinical tool for identifying people who may benefit most from interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Warfarin use, mortality, bleeding and stroke in haemodialysis patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusions In our population of HD patients with AF, the mortality is very high. OAT is not associated with increased mortality, while antiplatelet drugs are. OAT seems, on the contrary, associated with a better survival; however, it does not decrease the incidence of ischaemic stroke, whereas it increases the incidence of bleeding. Bleeding risk is lower in subjects in whom the INR is kept within the therapeutic range.

Hypertension - human studies
Conclusions:Higher predialysis SBP variability is associated with stroke on HD populations suggesting a potential role for cerebral perfusion instability. We confirm known associations between age, diabetes, pre-existent cerebrovascular disease and hypertension. In contrast to studies in non-dialysis patients we do not find an association between EPO dose and stroke. Interventional trials of blood pressure management on stroke are recommended.

Progeria syndrome in CKD/ESRD
Conclusions: Renal impairment independently associates with greater stroke disability at presentation and worse functional outcomes despite modern stroke care. Nonetheless these patients are also less likely to be thrombolysed for acute ischaemic stroke, which suggests a possible inequity in access to healthcare that requires urgent study.

Renal physiology and kidney stones
Conclusions: The occurrence of a kidney stone is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events including AMI, death due to CHD,PTCA/CABG and stroke. These data suggest that people with a clinically recognized kidney stone should be followed more closely to evaluate for the possibility of subsequent cardiovascular events -- younger people and women.

Use and safety of heparin-free maintenance hemodialysis in the USA
Conclusions Patient markers of increased risk of bleeding and facility region associated with heparin-free HD use. Despite the potential benefits of avoiding heparin use, heparin-free HD was not significantly associated with decreased hazards of death, bleeding or thrombosis, suggesting that it may be no safer than HD with heparin.

Neurological complications in chronic kidney disease patients
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a high prevalence of cerebrovascular disorders such as stroke, white matter diseases, intracerebral microbleeds and cognitive impairment. This situation has been observed not only in end-stage renal disease patients but also in patients with mild or moderate CKD. The occurrence of cerebrovascular disorders may be linked to the presence of traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors in CKD. Ferric carboxymaltose in patients with iron-deficiency anemia and impaired renal function: the REPAIR-IDA trial
Conclusions Two 750-mg infusions of FCM are a safe and effective alternative to multiple lower dose iron sucrose infusions in NDD-CKD patients with iron-deficiency anemia.

Extending the role of peritoneal dialysis: can we win hearts and minds?
Conclusion Both these applications require substantial further clinical evaluation before they can justify wider adoption but their potential to alleviate morbidity on a large and potentially highly cost-effective scale demands further study.

Correlates and outcomes of warfarin initiation in kidney transplant recipients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation

Regulation of the epithelial Na+ channel by the mTORC2/SGK1 pathway
The epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) is decisive for sodium reabsorption by the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron (ASDN) of the kidney. ENaC is regulated by the serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1), a kinase genomically upregulated by several hormones including glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Cardiovascular risk in women attending primary care centres: baseline data of the EVA study
Conclusions Four in 10 women attending primary care centres had a high or very high cardiovascular risk. Percentages of classic cardiovascular risk factors were higher in HT than in NHT and increased significantly with age. The most commonly used drugs were renin–angiotensin system blockers and diuretics.

The impact of bariatric surgery on renal and cardiac functions in morbidly obese patients
Conclusions In morbidly obese patients, GFR is usually normal and only a small percentage of them show hyperfiltration or a reduced GFR. Bariatric surgery has a favourable impact on renal function in only a reduced group of patients who also experience an improvement in cardiac performance.
