Teleneurology applications: Report of the Telemedicine Work Group of the American Academy of Neurology.
CONCLUSIONS: Teleneurology is an effective tool for the rapid evaluation of patients in remote locations requiring neurologic care. These underserved locations include geographically isolated rural areas as well as urban cores with insufficient available neurology specialists. With this technology, neurologists will be better able to meet the burgeoning demand for access to neurologic care in an era of declining availability. An increase in physician awareness and support at the federal and state level is necessary to facilitate expansion of telemedicine into further areas of neurology. Quality of life impact of cardiovascular and affective conditions among older residents from urban and rural communities.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular and affective conditions are key determinants of physical and psychological impairment. Persons affected by physical-psychological comorbidity experience greater psychological impairment. Social capital is associated with community remoteness and may ameliorate the psychological impairment associated with affective disorders and financial difficulties. The use of classifications of remoteness that are sensitive to social and health service accessibility determinants of health may better inform future investigations into the impact of context on quality of life outcomes. Thrombolysis delivery by a regional telestroke network--experience from the U.K. National Health Service.
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of a horizontal networking approach for stroke telemedicine, which may be applicable to areas where traditional "hub-and-spoke" models may not be geographically feasible. PMID: 24572251 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

A low-cost, tablet-based option for prehospital neurologic assessment: The iTREAT Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Utilizing a low-cost, tablet-based platform and commercial cellular networks, we can reliably perform prehospital neurologic assessments in both rural and urban settings. Further research is needed to establish the reliability and validity of prehospital mobile telestroke assessment in live patients presenting with acute neurologic symptoms. The neuroprotection effect of oxygen therapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This study reviews the oxygen therapy (normobaric oxygen [NBO] and hyperbaric oxygen [HBO]) in both stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients and meta-analyzes the efficacy of two oxygen therapies in different kinds of injuries. In stroke patients, NBO showed significant improvement in reperfusion rate while there is no favorable outcome effect of HBO treatment. In patients with TBI, HBO showed significant improvement of Glasgow outcome scale score and reduction of overall mortality while NBO may play a favorable role in improving brain metabolism.

Functional dependence among older adults: a cross-sectional study with a rural population of southern Brazil.
CONCLUSION: Older adults in rural areas have a high prevalence of functional dependence. Knowledge of functional dependence and associated factors in rural populations is necessary for the planning and developing actions, especially in the routine of primary care, which promote health and prevent or postpone the decline in functional capacity. Patient-Led Mass Screening for Atrial Fibrillation in the Older Population Using Handheld Electrocardiographic Devices Integrated With a Clinician-Coordinated Remote Central Monitoring System: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial and Process Evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: By incorporating an integrated health care approach involving patient empowerment, centralized clinician-coordinated ECG monitoring, and facilitation of primary care and specialist services, it is possible to diagnose and treat AF early to reduce stroke risk. This study will provide new information on how to implement AF screening using digital health technology practicably and feasibly for older and frail populations residing in the community.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12621000184875; https://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?id=380877.INTERNAT...

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in a regional Victoria setting, findings from the crossroads studies (2001-2003 and  2016-2018)
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AF among community-based participants in regional Victoria was similar to predominantly metropolitan-based studies, and was unchanged over time despite increased rates of risk factors. Electrocardiogram rhythm strip investigation was successfully utilised, and particularly benefited from physician overview.PMID:35938603 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.12914
