Modern Treatment of Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis —The Importance of Both Medical Therapy and Carotid Endarterectomy
Each year there are approximately 700  000 new ischemic strokes in the US, and 10% to 15% of them are caused by thromboembolism from a previously asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS). Three large randomized clinical trials, published in the 1990s and early 2000s, have demonstrated a significant benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) i n preventing stroke in patients with severe ACS compared with medical therapy alone. They showed a 50% relative risk reduction in 5-year stroke rate and an approximately 1% per year absolute stroke risk reduction. Over the course of the past 2 decades, there has been significant improvement...

Effects of Ibuprofen during Exertional Heat Stroke in Mice
Purpose We hypothesized that IBU would exacerbate intestinal injury, reduce exercise performance, and increase susceptibility to heat stroke. Methods To test this hypothesis, we administered IBU via diet to male and female C57/BL6J mice, over 48 h before EHS. Susceptibility to EHS was determined by assessing exercise response using a forced running wheel, housed inside an environmental chamber at 37.5°C. Core temperature (Tc) was monitored by telemetry. Mice were allocated into four groups: exercise only (EXC); EHS + IBU; EXC + IBU; and EHS only. Exercise performance and Tc profiles were evaluated and stomachs, intes...

Case Study: Physical Capacity and Nutritional Status Before and After a Single-Handed Yacht Race.
Abstract During solitary sailing the sailor is exposed to sleep deprivation and difficulties in consuming regular meals. Sailor weight loss is often reported. In the present case study we describe changes in the physical capacity and the nutritional status of an athlete attempting a single-handed yacht race around the globe. An Italian male ocean racer (GM) asked for our help to reach an optimum level of physical and nutritional preparation. We planned his diet after assessing his anthropometric parameters and body composition as well as his usual energy intake and nutritional expenditure. The diet consisted in 12...
