Passed without a stroke: A UK mixed method study exploring student nurses' knowledge of stroke
Conclusions: All nursing students should have experience of being in contact with people who have had a stroke — and at present this does not always happen. A national intervention study is now suggested with a view to providing stroke education which is proportionate to its significance as a major health issue.Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses draw upon their fundamental clinical skills to care and treat patients who have survived a stroke. Additionally, stroke survivors also require enhanced knowledge and this is recognised in the growth of specialist stroke nurses. Improving stroke mortality and morbidity is the ...

Differences Between New Immigrants From the Former Soviet Union and Veteran Residents in Knowledge, Perception, and Risk Factors of Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Veteran residents showed lower levels of knowledge about stroke. Educational campaigns aimed at increasing knowledge of stroke among Israel's general population in Israel, as well as culturally targeting specific subgroups, are recommended. The Influence of β-Adrenergic Receptor Kinase-1 on Stroke-induced Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: β-Adrenergic receptor kinase-1 has a significant quantifiable influence on lymphocyte proportion at 48 hours and on the classification of sustained stroke-induced immunodeficiency. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: β-Adrenergic stimulation influences immunodeficiency in AIS. PMID: 29601376 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Community-Based Stroke Recognition Education and Response: An Evidence-Based Intervention Project.
CONCLUSIONS: FAST was simple to teach and engaging for participants. Using the FAST curriculum in senior center populations increased the participants' awareness of stroke signs and symptoms, and their willingness to activate the 911 emergency system. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Educational interventions in the community with older adults can produce increased awareness of stroke symptoms and willingness to respond when necessary. Promoting Evidence-Based Practice at a Primary Stroke Center: A Nurse Education Strategy.
DISCUSSION: This nurse education strategy increased RNs' confidence in ability to explain the path from evidence to bedside nursing care by demonstrating how evidence-based clinical practice guidelines provide current evidence used to create standardized order sets. Although further evaluation of the intervention's effectiveness is needed, this educational intervention has the potential for generalization to different types of standardized order sets to increase nurse confidence in utilization of evidence-based practice. The Influence of β-Adrenergic Receptor Kinase-1 on Stroke-induced Immunodeficiency Syndrome
The objective was to quantify the influence of lymphocyte BARK-1 on stroke-induced immunodeficiency in AIS patients. Methods: A prospective clinical cohort study was conducted (N = 44). Measures included age, gender, race, risk factors for stroke, stroke severity, comorbidities, presence of infection, white blood cell counts and differential proportions, and lymphocyte BARK-1. Student t tests, effect sizes, and linear and logistic regressions were conducted to test the study objective. The study was approved by the Oregon Health & Science University Institutional Review Board. Results: There were significant changes ...

Reducing Stroke Risk Among Young Adult African Americans: A Feasibility Study
Abstract African Americans are disproportionately affected by stroke and its modifiable risk factors, and strategies are needed to help African Americans adopt healthy lifestyles early in life. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of the Stroke Counseling for Risk Reduction (SCORRE) intervention, a tailored, theory‐based intervention consisting of a motivational video of young African American stroke survivors, the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7® (LS7) risk assessment and education tool, and a 6‐week behavioral risk reduction diary. Feasibility and changes in theoretical variables were...

Promoting Evidence-Based Practice at a Primary Stroke Center: A Nurse Education Strategy
Background: Promoting a culture of evidence-based practice within a health care facility is a priority for health care leaders and nursing professionals; however, tangible methods to promote translation of evidence to bedside practice are lacking. Objectives: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to design and implement a nursing education intervention demonstrating to the bedside nurse how current evidence-based guidelines are used when creating standardized stroke order sets at a primary stroke center, thereby increasing confidence in the use of standardized order sets at the point of care and supporting e...

Mobile Application as a Learning Aid for Nurses and Nursing Students to Identify and Care for Stroke Patients: Pretest and Posttest Results.
In this study, a total of 115 nurses from health services in the South of Brazil and 35 nursing students of a community university participated. The stages focused on development, modeling of clinical cases, problem-based learning, pretest (before) app use, and posttest (after) use of the app. The results of the pretest and posttest corrections showed a substantial statistical difference (P < .001), indicating a significant knowledge gain after the use of the app, particularly in terms of the detection scales and interpretation of the imaging tests. The mSmartAVC app used at the bedside supported decision-making for det...

Extending inter-professional learning through the use of a multi-disciplinary Wiki
We report and reflect on the students' evaluations of both the Wiki as process and outcome and discuss the value of Wikis for inter-professional learning.Findings show that, in addition to being an enjoyable and flexible learning experience, the Wiki satisfied its intended aims. There was a variation in the level and quality of student participation the causes of which are discussed. Ground rules for effective Wiki use are proposed.

British secondary school students report frequent abdominal pain with associated physical and emotional symptoms
Commentary on: Vila M, Kramer T, Obiols JE, et al.. Abdominal pain in British young people: associations, impairment and health care use. J Psychosom Res 2012;73:437–42. Implications for practice and research Abdominal pain is common in children, and frequently associated with anxiety, depression, school absenteeism and physical complaints such as headache and limb pain. Assessment and treatment of children with abdominal pain should be underpinned by a biopsychosocial approach. Functional abdominal pain research should use standardised research tools and definitions such as the Rome III criteria. Context Between 20...

Nurses’ Scope of Practice and the Implication for Quality Nursing Care
ConclusionsLower‐category nurses and student nurses should be allowed to perform only tasks within their scope of practice for which they are licensed or enrolled. Nurses with limited formal theoretical training are not adequately prepared to perform tasks unsupervised, even in the current global nursing shortage scenario. Clinical RelevanceTo optimize and ensure safe and quality patient care, risk assessments should be done by a registered professional nurse, who will then coordinate the nursing care of the patient with the assistance of the lower category of nurses.
