Early Palliative Care Consultation Decreases Length of Stay in Severe Stroke Patients (P1.211)
Conclusions:Early PCC in severe stroke patients decreased hospital LOS by 3 days. This may be due to prompt clarification of goals of care and hastened discharge to hospice. Advanced age, poor pre-stroke functional status, and severe post-stroke deficits and disability warrant early PCC. In addition to decreasing LOS, further study is needed to determine whether early PCC also limits futile tests, procedures, and iatrogenic complications. Taking Neurology to the Underserved - A Pilot Initiative in an Urban Homebound Program (P6.007)
CONCLUSIONS: Our pilot program highlights types of chronic neurologic illnesses afflicting the homebound population, treatment interventions utilized, and clinical challenges encountered. By considering the real-world intersection of disease and living environment, trainees gained perspective on the debilitating impact of neurological illness on homebound patients.
