The Temporospatial Role of Microcirculatory Dysfunction in the Prediction of Ischemia or Infarction in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhages (P2.281)
Conclusions:This ongoing study suggests that patients with low mean minimal pulsatility index had poor functional outcomes relative to patients that had higher mean pulsatility index.Study Supported by: This work was supported in part by a grant from the McKnight Brain Research Foundation, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Research Trust Fund, a grant from NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship awarded by the Foundation for Anesthesiology Education and Research, a grant from the Medical Student Research Program at the University of Florida, and the Departmen...

Early Palliative Care Consultation Decreases Length of Stay in Severe Stroke Patients (P1.211)
Conclusions:Early PCC in severe stroke patients decreased hospital LOS by 3 days. This may be due to prompt clarification of goals of care and hastened discharge to hospice. Advanced age, poor pre-stroke functional status, and severe post-stroke deficits and disability warrant early PCC. In addition to decreasing LOS, further study is needed to determine whether early PCC also limits futile tests, procedures, and iatrogenic complications. Ultimately, timely identification of PCC candidates may produce higher satisfaction and decreased hospital costs.Disclosure: Dr. Schloss has nothing to disclose. Dr. Tversky has nothing t...

Sexuality and disability, a poorly studied relationship in neurology (P2.199)
Conclusions:Sexual dysfunction was more frequent in patients with chronic neurological diseases. We found a statistically significant relationship between sexual dysfunction and disability. For overall sexual function, the results indicate that women had lower rates of sexual performance for the same degree of disability than menDisclosure: Dr. Nasimbera has nothing to disclose. Early Improvement in NIH Stoke Scale during Inter-hospital Transfer is Common and is Associated with Lower In-hospital Mortality (P3.044)
Conclusions:Early improvement in stroke severity during interhospital transfer is common, and is not confined to patients receiving thrombolysis. These early improvement patients have very low mortality, and it is substantially lower than in those without early improvement, despite higher initial NIHSS. This has important implications for assessing the safety and efficacy of drip and ship thrombolysis or other pre-transfer interventions. Further research is warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Mahmood has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ali has nothing to disclose. Dr. Siddiqui has nothing to disclose. Dr. Cohen has nothing to disclose. Dr....

Safety and Efficacy of IV-tPA Use in Patients 80 Years and Older- A Retrospective Review (P2.305)
Conclusion—We observed no increase in sICH post IV-tPA in patients 80+ when compared to those younger. Higher mortality in those 80+ likely due to baseline disabilities. Within the 80+ group, predictors of mortality and poor outcomes included disabilities prior to hospitalization, prior stroke/TIA, higher NIHSS at admission, sICH post treatment and higher diastolic blood pressure.Disclosure: Dr. Lau has nothing to disclose. Quality of In-Hospital Stroke Care in Veterans Affairs Hospitals (P5.146)
Conclusions: Veterans who develop an in-hospital stroke receive similar quality of care as patients presenting to the ED although fewer in-hospital patients had dysphagia screening. Interestingly, tPA eligibility and utilization were higher for in-hospital strokes although utilization did not reach significance. While it is reassuring that in-hospital strokes are receiving similar quality of care, there is still room for improvement in all patient care settings and in-hospital stroke patients should be included in future QI processes.Disclosure: Dr. Lyerly has nothing to disclose. The Presence of an Advanced Practice Nurse Stroke Program Coordinator Decreases Door-to-Needle Times (P5.149)
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of an APN SPC was associated with reduced median DTN times. The presence of an APN SPC, in addition to an on duty neurologist, may reduce time between door and needle, engendering improvements in patient outcomes.Disclosure: Dr. Whaley has nothing to disclose. TIA Biomarkers Determined Through Proteomics (S30.002)
Conclusions: PBP has been identified as potential serum biomarker for TIA. Larger sample size may find that ceruloplasmin is an additional candidate. Ultimately, a panel of proteins may be required. Significance of Periclot MMP-9 in Ischemic Stroke Patients Undergoing Intra-arterial Interventions (P4.303)
CONCLUSIONS: Decreased periclot MMP-9 may be predictive of HT after ischemic stroke, contrasting with previous work demonstrating elevated peripheral MMP-9 as predictive of HT. Increased periclot MCP-4 and angiogenin expression, as well as decreased numbers of circulating monocytes, may serve as additional predictive markers of HT. Future work should measure the activity of periclot MMP-9. Study Supported by: Shimojani, LLC and NIH (DJ).Disclosure: Dr. Song has nothing to disclose. Dr. Prager has nothing to disclose. Assessment of Stroke Knowledge and Attitudes among Riyadh Medical Students: A Cross-sectional Study (P2.303)
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated average medical students’ knowledge of stroke and identified knowledge gaps in different domains of basic stroke knowledge. Stroke education modules should be incorporated into the preclinical curriculum and neurology or stroke clerkships should be mandatory for all students. Emphasizing the high risk of stroke recurrence in patients with minor or transient symptoms is crucial for decreasing the burden of stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Al Zwahmah has received personal compensation in an editorial capacity for Neurosciences Journal.

Anxiety influences TIA diagnosis (P7.134)
Conclusions: We found an elevated TIA-IS ratio among patients with a concurrent ICD9 code for anxiety. The ABCD2 score, assessing symptoms and vascular risk factors, is promoted as a criterion for admission; however, these data suggest that comorbid conditions such as anxiety along with demographic and hospital factors also influence TIA diagnosis. The validity and meaning of an ICD9 code for anxiety is uncertain. The code may be associated with over-diagnosis of TIA as well as increased recognition of true TIA.Disclosure: Dr. Sugrue has nothing to disclose. Dr. Bhupali has nothing to disclose. Internet Teaching of the Neurologic Examination and OSCE Performance in the Neurology Clerkship (s19.006)
CONCLUSIONS Using www.neuroexam.com significantly improved students’ performance on a Stroke OSCE compared to online NIHSS training, with similar trends for Headache and Neuropathy. General neurologic examination training rather than focused stroke examination training may be more helpful for students, even when examining stroke patients. Online websites with teaching videos may represent a viable model for improving students’ skills with the neurologic examination.
