Todd's paralysis due to hyperperfusion syndrome after carotid endarterectomy mimicking postoperative stroke
J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino). 2023 Jun 19. doi: 10.23736/S0021-9509.23.12720-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTodd's paralysis is a neurological deficit that is observed in <10% of patients following epileptic seizures. Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) is a rare complication following carotid endarterectomy (CEA), seen in 0-3% of the patients, characterized by focal neurological deficit, headache, disorientation, and sometimes seizures. In this case report, we present a case of CHS after CEA followed by seizures and Todd's paralysis that mimicked postoperative stroke. A 75-year-old female patient was admitted for CE...

Role of mini access during carotid endarterectomy: a prospective observational study
CONCLUSIONS: According to these results the mini skin incision allows a sufficient vessels exposure for dissection, endarterectomy, reconstruction of carotid artery and shunt positioning, minimizing surgical invasiveness, decreasing the incidence of temporary cervical nerve dysfunction and improving the aesthetic result with significative less pain suffered by the patients. Transverse cervical and great auricular nerves sparing decreased postoperative hypo-paresthesia in the neck, improving patient's satisfaction. These data suggest that this procedure can be considered safe. Exploratory analysis suggested that it could po...

Guideline on carotid surgery for stroke prevention: updates from the Italian Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. A trend towards personalized medicine
CONCLUSIONS: This GL updates on the main recommendations for the most appropriate diagnostic and medical-surgical management of patients with atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis to prevent ischemic stroke. This GL also provides useful elements for the application of PM in good clinical practice.PMID:35848869 | DOI:10.23736/S0021-9509.22.12368-2
