Does Mitral Valve Calcium In Patients Undergoing Mitral Valve Replacement Portend Worse Survival?
CONCLUSIONS: Conservative approach to treat MAC achieves satisfactory results. Patients with MAC have significant comorbidities contributing to a worse survival though MAC in itself is not a risk factor for mortality. PMID: 30391339 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Surgical outcomes in Behcet's disease patients with severe aortic regurgitation.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that mechanical root replacement combined with a low post-operative C-reactive protein level maintained through adjunctive immunomodulation therapy may lead to optimal surgical outcomes in Behcet's disease associated with severe aortic regurgitation. PMID: 30315793 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Valve Sparing Root Replacement Provides Excellent Mid-Term Outcomes for Bicuspid Valve Aortopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: VSRR can be safely and effectively performed in young patients with bicuspid valve anatomy regardless of degree of pre-operative AI. Valve function is durable and the incidence of valve-related complications is low. VSRR is an attractive and potentially superior option to conventional root replacement in appropriately selected patients with bicuspid aortopathy. PMID: 30292845 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preoperative Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Slashes Risk Score in Advanced Structural Heart Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: ECMO can be used as a bridge to heart valve or septal defect surgery in severely decompensated patients. Through recovery of end-organ function, ECMO may allow surgical correction of structural heart disease in patients considered inoperable or convert a salvage situation to an elective operation. Minimally Invasive Approaches to Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement: A Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive approaches to AVR yield excellent outcomes in high volume centers. They reduce hospital stay and incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation, and, therefore, should be considered in patients undergoing AVR. However, the operative approach should be selected according to surgeon's technical expertise and what is best for specific patient profile. PMID: 30189193 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes of Planned 2-Stage Hybrid Aortic Repair with Dacron Replaced Proximal Landing Zone.
CONCLUSIONS: Planned 2-stage HAR with open 1st stage PAR followed by 2nd stage TEVAR with Dacron replaced PLZ yields excellent short and long-term results, including low rates of re-intervention likely due to long-segment PLZ within Dacron-replaced aorta. The technique should be considered in patients with even mild (>4.0 cm) ascending aortic dilation in whom HAR is otherwise the preferred treatment option. Hemiarch Reconstruction Vs Clamped Aortic Anastomosis for Concomitant Ascending Aortic Aneurysm.
CONCLUSIONS: Hemiarch replacement using DHCA with RCP does not increase the risk of operative complications compared to a normothermic, clamped-distal aortic anastomosis, and therefore its use should not be limited when planning complex multi-procedural reconstructions during elective ascending thoracic aortic replacement with concomitant cardiac surgery. Use of an Automated Suture Fastening Device in Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement.
CONCLUSIONS: In minimally invasive aortic valve replacement, the Cor-Knot device was associated with reduced aortic cross-clamp time while providing equivalent clinical outcomes. Larger studies are needed to confirm efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the Cor-Knot device in minimally invasive aortic valve surgery. PMID: 29501643 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
