Conclusion: POAF may represent a propensity for recurrent PAF, and not simply a transient consequence of post‐operative stress and inflammation. Topical amiodarone to prevent postoperative atrial fibrillation: Need for further study
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication after cardiac surgery that increases hospital stay and the risk of stroke.1 Prophylactic systemic administration of amiodarone in the perioperative period prevents postoperative AF2; however, its challenging side-effect profile limits its routine and widespread use as prophylaxis.3 It was therefore with great interest that we recently read the report by Feng and colleagues4 describing their success in applying a topical amiodarone-releasing hydrogel on the atrial surface during coronary artery bypass grafting operations.

Abstract 374: Quality Improvement Program to Optimize Pre-Operative Evaluation of Elective Cardiovascular Surgery Patients Reduces Complications and Improves Length of Stay Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: A standardized pre-operative evaluation protocol in combination with prophylactic amiodarone in appropriate patients was associated with lower overall complications and a reduction in post-operative AF and LOS. Standardized protocols may enable health care providers to optimize pre-operative management of elective surgery patients and improve care quality and outcomes.

Management of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation and Subsequent Outcomes in Contemporary Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: Insights From the Society of Thoracic Surgeons CAPS‐Care Atrial Fibrillation Registry
ConclusionsPostoperative AF is common following CABG, and such patients continue to have higher rates of postoperative complications. Postoperative AF is significantly associated with increased length of stay following surgery.
