Comparative analysis of stenting for carotid web and atherosclerotic disease
CONCLUSION: Stenting for CaW was found to be technically simpler than CAD and not to confer increased risk of baroreceptor dysregulation. Intimal hyperplasia was uncommon in CaW cases.PMID:37563917 | DOI:10.1177/15910199231188856

Rescue therapy after thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion due to underlying atherosclerosis: review of literature
Front Neurol. 2023 Jun 16;14:1181295. doi: 10.3389/fneur.2023.1181295. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIn this review article, we summarized the current advances in rescue management for reperfusion therapy of acute ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion due to underlying intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS). It is estimated that 24-47% of patients with acute vertebrobasilar artery occlusion have underlying ICAS and superimposed in situ thrombosis. These patients have been found to have longer procedure times, lower recanalization rates, higher rates of reocclusion and lower rates of favorable outcomes than patients ...

Novel technique of stent placement via gateway balloon in intracranial atherosclerosis-associated large vessel occlusion
CONCLUSION: Our preliminary experience suggests possible safety and feasibility of deploying Neuroform Atlas stent through a compatible Gateway balloon microcatheter without the need for ICH-associated microcatheter exchange. Further studies with long-term clinical and angiographic follow-up are warranted to corroborate our initial findings.PMID:37391866 | DOI:10.1111/jon.13139

Balloon Angioplasty for Symptomatic Intracranial Artery Stenosis (BASIS): protocol of a prospective, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial
DISCUSSION: BASIS trail is the first RCT to compare the efficacy and safety of balloon angioplasty plus AMM to AMM alone in sICAS patients, which may provide an alternative perspective for treating sICAS.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03703635; https://www.CLINICALTRIALS: gov.PMID:37202152 | DOI:10.1136/svn-2022-002288

New Diffusion Abnormalities Following Endovascular Treatment for Intracranial Atherosclerosis
Conclusion New ischemic brain lesions on diffusion-weighted MRI scans were common after endovascular treatment for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, and occurrence may be associated with cigarette smoking and the number of operative attempts. Clinical trial registration no. ChiCTR2100052925 © RSNA, 2023 Supplemental material is available for this article. Staged endovascular recanalization for symptomatic atherosclerotic non-acutely occluded internal carotid artery
CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study found that staged endovascular recanalization for symptomatic atherosclerotic NAOICA may be feasible with an acceptable technical success rate and a low complication rate in the selected candidates.PMID:36883208 | DOI:10.1177/15910199231162666

Rescue stenting after the failure of mechanical thrombectomy to treat acute intracranial atherosclerotic occlusion
CONCLUSIONS: Rescue stenting after MT failure might be a feasible rescue modality for treating acute intracranial atherosclerotic occlusion.PMID:36703624 | PMC:PMC9873241 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.1001496

Rescue Intracranial Balloon Angioplasty with or without Stent Placement in Acute Strokes with Intracranial Atherosclerotic Disease
CONCLUSION: Rescue angioplasty with or without stenting can lead to significant clinical improvement in patients with ICAD presenting with ELVO and refractory to thrombectomy; however, this procedure is associated with a high rate of morbidity in acute setting.PMID:36681321 | DOI:10.1016/j.wneu.2023.01.057

Comparison of drug-coated balloon with conventional balloon for angioplasty in symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with CB angioplasty, DCB angioplasty can effectively reduce the incidence of restenosis. Further studies are needed to validate the role of DCB angioplasty in the management of symptomatic ICAS.PMID:36604174 | DOI:10.1136/jnis-2022-019685

Efficacy of medical treatment and balloon angioplasty for severe intracranial atherosclerosis: a high-resolution MR vessel wall imaging
CONCLUSION: Intracranial atherosclerotic plaque shrank and tended to be stable at 12 months of medical treatment. Plaque burden was significantly reduced 6 months after balloon angioplasty. This may provide evidence for the application and selection of treatment strategies for intracranial atherosclerotic disease.KEY POINTS: • Plaque burden and plaque enhancement were significantly reduced at 12 months of medical treatment compared to baseline. • Plaque burden was significantly reduced at 6 months after balloon angioplasty compared with baseline. • No significant difference in the recurrence rate of ischemic stroke b...
