Safety and efficacy of eptifibatide in acute ischemic stroke requiring extracranial carotid artery stenting
CONCLUSIONS: Eptifibatide may have a role in the management of acute stroke requiring carotid stenting. Caution may be required in those with established infarct on presentation imaging.PMID:37574792 | DOI:10.1177/15910199231193928

Acute stroke, dysphagia and nutritional support.
Abstract Annually, an estimated 152000 people in the UK have a stroke, accounting for 11% of all deaths in England and Wales, but for those that survive, nutrition is key to the body's recovery. Consequences of malnutrition can include increased susceptibility to infection, delayed healing, impaired cardiovascular function, decreased muscle strength and depression. Given the complex nature of post-stroke dysphagia, it may not be possible that simple screening tools sufficiently identify those at risk of aspiration. If a patient is deemed unsafe or unable to meet their nutrition and hydration needs orally, guidelin...

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy versus nasogastric feeding in older individuals with non-stroke dysphagia: A systematic review
Conclusion Firm conclusions could not be derived on whether PEG feeding is beneficial over NG feeding in older persons with non-stroke dysphagia, as previously published literature were unclear or had a high risk of bias. A well-designed and adequately powered RCT, which includes carer strain and quality of life as outcome measures is therefore urgently needed.

Effects of nasogastric catheterization in patients with stroke and dysphagia.
This study aimed to analyze the effects of gastric intubation in patients with stroke and dysphagia. A systematic literature review was performed in six databases, using the keywords stroke and intubation, gastrointestinal. One hundred and twenty studies were found, from which three clinical trials were selected. The results showed different outcomes, including: increased serum albumin level (gastrostomy), poor prognosis and risk of death (gastrostomy), increased treatment failures because of blocking, displacement and reinsertion need of the nasogastric tube, and increased incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (nasogastr...

An exploratory descriptive cohort study of 90-day prognosis after acute ischaemic stroke with mechanical thrombectomy
CONCLUSION: Almost half of the surviving patients had a poor prognosis. In our country, this surgery and rehabilitation impose a significant financial burden that needs to be addressed. However, the longer length of hospital stay and higher costs at discharge may be contributing factors to worse outcomes. The outcomes of comprehensive nursing assessment of the patients, including nursing needs, activities of daily living, and neurological function, can predict their outcome.IMPACT STATEMENT: We recommend a comprehensive nursing assessment at discharge that predicts patient outcomes and can be used for subsequent targeted i...

Stroke: ineffective tube securement reduces nutrition and drug treatment.
In conclusion, most tubes studied were lost to inadvertent tube removal, leading to clinically significant delays to nutrition, hydration and drug treatments; this may impair recovery. Reducing tube loss is likely to reduce patient distress, treatment cost and enhance recovery. PMID: 28640722 [PubMed - in process]
