Caregiver-proxy reliability of the Igbo-culture adapted Maleka Stroke Community Reintegration Measure: a validation study.
CONCLUSION: The I-MSCRIM has acceptable caregiver-proxy reliability among Igbo stroke survivors in South-East Nigeria. This suggests that primary informal caregivers of stroke survivors can reliably estimate the CR of their care recipients when I-MSCRIM is administered to them. This will be useful when a stroke survivor cannot respond to I-MSCRIM. PMID: 28361604 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

XBP1 (X-Box-Binding Protein-1)-Dependent O-GlcNAcylation Is Neuroprotective in Ischemic Stroke in Young Mice and Its Impairment in Aged Mice Is Rescued by Thiamet-G Basic Sciences
Conclusions—Our study indicates a critical role for the IRE1/XBP1 unfolded protein response branch in stroke outcome. O-GlcNAcylation is a prosurvival pathway that is activated in the stroke penumbra in young mice but impaired in aged mice. Boosting prosurvival pathways to counterbalance the age-related decline in the brain’s self-healing capacity could be a promising strategy to improve ischemic stroke outcome in aged brains.

Estimated Impact of Emergency Medical Service Triage of Stroke Patients on Comprehensive Stroke Centers Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Emergency Medical Service triage to CSCs based on stroke severity and symptom duration may be feasible. The impact on stroke systems of care and patient outcomes remains to be determined and requires prospective evaluation.

Confounding by Pre-Morbid Functional Status in Studies of Apparent Sex Differences in Severity and Outcome of Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—We found no evidence of a worse outcome of stroke in women when adjusting for age and pre-morbid mRS. Failure to account for sex differences in pre-morbid handicap could explain contradictory findings in previous studies. Properties of the mRS may also contribute to these inconsistencies.

Burden of Intracranial Atherosclerosis Is Associated With Long-Term Vascular Outcome in Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—ICAS burden was independently associated with the risk of subsequent composite vascular outcome in patients with ischemic stroke. These findings suggest that ICAS burden can reflect the risk of long-term vascular outcome.

Investigating cognitive ability and self-reported driving performance of post-stroke adults in a driving simulator.
Conclusion This study suggests that post-stroke drivers may be aware of their deficits and adjust their driving behavior. Furthermore, using self-performance measures alongside a driving simulator and cognitive assessments may provide complementary fitness-to-drive assessments, as well as rehabilitation tools during post-stroke recovery. Patient reported outcomes of hand function three years after stroke.
CONCLUSION: Patients can perceive limitations on several domains with respect to hand function 2-5 years after stroke. Problems related to the appearance of the hand and satisfaction with hand function can be relevant and should be considered accordingly. Persistent hand problems after stroke are related to a more severe, supratentorial stroke in lower educated patients. PMID: 29025365 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

One-Year Outcomes After Minor Stroke or High-Risk Transient Ischemic Attack Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Contemporary secondary stroke prevention strategies based on thorough diagnostic evaluation may contribute to the low subsequent vascular event rates observed in real-world clinical practice in Korea.

Substitution of Linoleic Acid for Other Macronutrients and the Risk of Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study suggests that replacing saturated fatty acid, glycemic carbohydrate, or monounsaturated fatty acid with linoleic acid may be associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke.

Stroke Incidence by Major Pathological Type and Ischemic Subtypes in the Auckland Regional Community Stroke Studies Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—A lack of change in IS and ICH incidence may reflect a trend toward increased incidence of younger strokes. Increased rates of large-artery atherosclerosis and small-vessel occlusion are associated with increased smoking and high blood pressure. Ethnic differences in the proportional distribution of pathological stroke subtypes suggest differential exposure and susceptibility to risk factors.

Community mobility after stroke: a systematic review.
Conclusion Survivors of stroke may experience a significant decrease in CM compared to people without neurological injury. Rehabilitation addressing motor function, coordination, independence in activities of daily living, balance and endurance may be important for achieving higher levels of CM. Outcome measures directly addressing CM are needed. PMID: 29322861 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
