Stroke patients with COVID-19 have increased inflammation, stroke severity and death
(University of Alabama at Birmingham) Stroke patients who also have COVID-19 showed increased systemic inflammation, a more serious stroke severity and a much higher rate of death, compared to stroke patients who did not have COVID-19, according a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of 60 ischemic stroke patients admitted to UAB Hospital between late March and early May 2020.

(American Academy of Neurology) Stroke is very rare in children, but colds, flu and other minor infections may temporarily increase stroke risk in children, according to a study published in the Sept. 30, 2015, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study also found routine childhood vaccines may decrease the risk of stroke.

Stroke risk higher after shingles, but antiviral drugs may provide protection
(Infectious Diseases Society of America) Patients' risk of stroke significantly increased following the first signs of shingles, but antiviral drugs appeared to offer some protection, according to a new study in Clinical Infectious Diseases, now available online. People with shingles, an often painful skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, had a higher stroke risk in the first six months after shingles symptoms appeared; this risk was particularly increased in patients with a rash near their eyes, the study found.
