Preventable Cases of Oral Anticoagulant-Induced Bleeding: Data From the Spontaneous Reporting System
Conclusion: Our findings describe the most reported risk factors for preventability of oral anticoagulant-induced bleedings. These factors may be useful for targeting interventions to improve pharmacovigilance activities in our regional territory and to reduce the burden of medication errors and inappropriate prescription. Introduction Oral anticoagulant therapy is widely used for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation, or for the prevention and treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (Raj et al., 1994; Monaco et al., 2017). Oral anticoagulants can be di...

Paradoxical embolism caused by ovarian vein thrombosis extending to inferior vena cava in a female with uterine myoma
We report the case of a 42-year-old female who was hospitalized for stroke. Detailed investigations revealed the existence of a PFO, pulmonary embolism, and ovarian vein thrombosis extending to inferior vena cava. She had a uterine myoma to be operated on but no other thrombophilic disorders. Anticoagulation therapy with direct oral anticoagulant successfully reduced the thrombus and prevented the recurrence of paradoxical embolism.<Learning objective: Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is often associated with malignancy, pelvic surgery, or pregnancy. This case shows uterine myoma as a possible cause of OVT and demonstrate...

Long-standing persistent effects of atrial volume reduction combined with pulmonary vein isolation
Publication date: Available online 18 June 2018Source: Journal of Cardiology CasesAuthor(s): Masami Takagaki, Naoko Ikeda, Hiroki Yamaguchi, Shinichi Mitsuyama, Tasuku Kadowaki, Tatsuya NakaoAbstractAlthough surgical left atrial (LA) volume reduction combined with mitral valve surgery and/or surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation has been reported to be effective, its long-term outcomes in the absence of mitral procedure are not well established. A 74-year-old man with two previous sternotomies—the first for pericardiectomy due to constrictive pericarditis and the second for mitral valve replacement with mechanical va...

A Hidden Danger In The New Versions Of Birth Control Pills
Women who take a newer version of birth control pills have a doubled risk of developing potentially fatal blood clots, according to a new study published in the British medical journal BMJ. Venous thromboembolism is a serious condition that encompasses both deep vein thrombosis -- when a person develops a blood clot in the legs -- and pulmonary embolism, in which the clot travels to the lungs and obstructs breathing. VTE is potentially fatal, and the study indicates that women who take combined oral contraceptives with newer progesterone formulations are two times more likely to develop it as opposed to women who take a ...

337-i * thoracoscopic left atrial appendectomy
Conclusions: This approach demonstrated feasibility, safety and effectiveness and should be considered as a possible alternative to percutaneous closure of the LAA. However, its effect on long-term prevention of stroke needs to be evaluated.
