The association of sleep apnea and stroke with cognitive performance: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study (I9-4B)
CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that S+SA is associated with lower verbal memory and executive function scores (but not highest global cognitive impairment) than SA only, stroke only, or neither.Disclosure: Dr. Molano has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kleindorfer has received personal compensation for activities with Genentech. Dr. McClure has received research support from Genzyme and Amgen. Dr. Unverzagt has received personal compensation for activities with Eli Lilly & Company as a consultant. Dr. Wadley has received personal compensation for activities with Amgen Inc. Dr. Howard has nothing to disclose.

Stroke Epidemiology and Risk Factor Management
This article reviews the current recommendations for the management of each of these modifiable risk factors. Recent Findings: It has been documented that some blood pressure medications may increase variability of blood pressure and ultimately increase the risk for stroke. Stroke prevention typically includes antiplatelet therapy (unless an indication for anticoagulation exists), so the most recent evidence supporting use of these drugs is reviewed. In addition, emerging risk factors, such as obstructive sleep apnea, electronic cigarettes, and elevated lipoprotein (a), are discussed. Summary: Overall, secondary stroke p...

Sleep-Disordered Breathing
ABSTRACT: Purpose of Review: Sleep-disordered breathing encompasses a broad spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, as well as sleep-related hypoventilation and hypoxemia. Diagnostic criteria have been updated in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Manual for Scoring Sleep and Associated Events. Neurologic providers should have basic knowledge and skills to identify at-risk patients, as these disorders are associated with substantial morbidity, the treatment of which is largely reve...

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often overlooked by clinicians; however, undiagnosed OSA can lead to negative outcomes for patients, including patients with underlying neurologic conditions. Clinicians should be aware of what questions to ask, what diagnostic tests to use, and what treatments to consider in patients with OSA. RECENT FINDINGS OSA influences many neurologic conditions, including stroke, epilepsy, headache, and neuromuscular conditions. Treatment of OSA is effective, especially with patient-tailored options, the correct education, and support. SUMMARY OSA is a serious medical condit...
