Stroke Awareness Among Community Residents in Chicago (P7.135)
CONCLUSIONS:Despite significant efforts made to increase public awareness about stroke, moderate deficits still exist. Future educational programs should consider targeted outreach to younger populations who may live with stroke survivors and minority populations at higher risk for stroke. In addition, financial barriers to calling EMS should be tackled at public policy level.Disclosure: Dr. Mathew has nothing to disclose. Dr. O’Neill has nothing to disclose. Sex differences in quality of life after ischemic stroke
Conclusion: Women have worse QOL than men up to 12 months after stroke, even after adjusting for important sociodemographic variables, stroke severity, and disability.

Activity limitations and subjective well-being after stroke
Conclusions: Activity limitations were not associated with stroke survivors' subjective well-being after adjustment for other factors. While some predictors of well-being after stroke were identified, the determinants of well-being remained largely unexplained.

Shoulder taping reduces injury and pain in stroke patients: Randomized controlled trial
Conclusions: Although there was a trend toward pain reduction and functional improvement associated with shoulder taping for 2 weeks after acute stage of stroke, this did not reach statistical significance. The long-term effects of taping need to be studied in large trials. Classification of evidence: This study provided Class III evidence that tri-pull shoulder taping was ineffective in significantly reducing shoulder pain in patients with acute stoke.

Vitreous Hemorrhage as a Complication of IV-tPA Therapy in a Patient with Acute Stroke (P4.227)
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first case report of vitreous hemorrhage following acute stroke therapy with IV-tPA. This underscores the risk of intraocular hemorrhage in patients with retinal neovascularization that could occur with other retinal vascular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy. The decision to proceed with IV-tPA in the presence of retinal neovascularization should be made on a case-by-case basis and further discussion with the patient.Disclosure: Dr. Shah has nothing to disclose. Early prediction of long-term upper limb spasticity after stroke: Part of the SALGOT study
Conclusions: Reduced sensorimotor function was the most important predictor both for any and severe spasticity, and spasticity could be predicted with high sensitivity and specificity 10 days poststroke.

Self-perceived psychological stress and risk of all-cause mortality after stroke: the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study (MSIS) (P4.306)
Conclusions:High self-perceived pre-stroke stress was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality after stroke. Further prospective studies are required to evaluate the role of psychological stress as a predictor of stroke outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Saber has nothing to disclose. Triage in Stroke Units: Physicians Perceptions and Ethical Issues (P02.008)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite a vocation to take care of all patients, triage practices are pointed out during stroke unit admission. They depend on the role of each physician in the acute stroke management. They are the integration of a distributive justice theory, of contextual data, but also of subjective clinician evaluation. The triage decisions are ineluctable because of the scarcity of resource but are complex and difficult to take for clinicians, because they face to the "rule of rescue". These medical choices involve also the values of the society.Disclosure: Dr. Yger has nothing to disclose. Dr. Crozier has nothing to dis...

Early Palliative Care Consultation Decreases Length of Stay in Severe Stroke Patients (P1.211)
Conclusions:Early PCC in severe stroke patients decreased hospital LOS by 3 days. This may be due to prompt clarification of goals of care and hastened discharge to hospice. Advanced age, poor pre-stroke functional status, and severe post-stroke deficits and disability warrant early PCC. In addition to decreasing LOS, further study is needed to determine whether early PCC also limits futile tests, procedures, and iatrogenic complications. Ultimately, timely identification of PCC candidates may produce higher satisfaction and decreased hospital costs.Disclosure: Dr. Schloss has nothing to disclose. Dr. Tversky has nothing t...
