9798 —Hidradenitis suppurativa is associated with increased odds of stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and PAD: A population-based analysis in the United States
Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psoriasis has been linked to cardiovascular disease. There is currently a deficiency in the literature regarding the prevalence of clinically important cardiovascular diseases that arise in patients with HS in a United States population. We sought to determine the odds of stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), and peripheral artery disease (PAD) in patients with HS compared with patients with psoriasis and controls.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in adults: An overview
ConclusionsAlthough HCM is the most prevalent genetic disorder affecting the heart, it often goes undiagnosed until midlife after patients show symptoms of myocardial remodeling. Adults with cardiomyopathy suffer SCD or adverse events such as stroke and heart failure from HCM. Early diagnosis will prevent SCD, improve quality of life, and slow patient's progression to heart failure. Implications for practiceEarly recognition of HCM in adults by their primary care providers will improve patients’ quality of life and reduce incidence of SCD, heart failure, and stroke.

Anticipating the management of Streptococcus agalactiae infective endocarditis
A patient who presented after falling out of bed had signs of right-sided stroke, which, after imaging, was suspicious for embolism with cardiac origin. Further investigation revealed a large aortic valve vegetation with mild aortic insufficiency, and the patient eventually developed heart failure requiring surgical intervention. Infective endocarditis is slowly becoming more prevalent, and clinicians should have a high index of suspicion when patients present with common complications of this disease, such as valvular dysfunction, heart failure, or stroke. Early diagnosis has been shown to reduce time to appropriate antib...

A thrombus in transit through a patent foramen ovale
ABSTRACT: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a congenital heart defect that may first be diagnosed in adulthood and has a prevalence of 25% to 30%. Although many patients with PFO are asymptomatic and do not require treatment, paradoxical embolism can cause stroke or myocardial infarction. The authors report an unusual case of PFO with a transversing thrombus in an 80-year-old man. The patient's initial presentation appeared clinically as acute coronary syndrome, but he was subsequently diagnosed with a massive thrombus in transit via a PFO and pulmonary embolus leading to right-sided heart failure.

Rate or Rhythm Control of Atrial Fibrillation - Pearls for the Internist.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation is an epidemic in Asia that is increasingly prevalent. Apart from stroke risk stratification and management of anticoagulation, physicians managing this group of patients also need to determine an optimal strategy in terms of rate or rhythm control. With new techniques of catheter ablation to maintain patients in sinus rhythm, patients with atrial fibrillation now have more options for treatment, on top of pharmacological methods. This paper aims to review the current evidence for rate and rhythm control in both general patients and subgroups of interest commonly encountered in clinica...
