Post-stroke depression: different characteristics based on follow-up stage and gender-a cohort perspective study from Mainland China.
CONCLUSION: PSD is common in stroke survivors, and female patients have higher prevalence of PSD. Risk factors for PSD in the acute phase are different from that in the chronic phase of stroke. Female gender is an independent risk factor for PSD in the acute stage of stroke. Smoking, frontal lobe lesion, and living alone are predictive factors for PSD in the chronic stage of stroke. NIHSS score is a risk factor for PSD both in the acute and in the chronic stage of stroke. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the elevated prevalence of PSD in female. Family history of stroke and death or vascular events within one year after ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: This study suggests that maternal stroke history, age<55 years at stroke onset and thrombotic stroke in the patients with a family history are associated with poor outcomes after stroke. Further studies from other samples are needed to replicate our findings due to a reason for excluding some severe stroke patients in this study. PMID: 30829563 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke recurrence among 30 days survivors of ischemic stroke in a prospective community-based study.
Authors: Ryglewicz D, Baranska-Gieruszczak M, Czlonkowska A, Lechowicz W, Hier D Abstract A cohort of 209 patients (105 men and 104 women), who survived 30 days after "first ever-in-lifetime ischemic stroke' were followed for one year. Predictors ofsurvival were examined by log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards method. Twenty-four patients had a stroke recurr~nce (11.4%). Thirteen of the patients with recurrent stroke (54%) died because of the sequelae of the second stroke. Stroke recurred in 16% of patients with stoke due to atherosclerosis, in 12.5% of patients with cardioembolic stroke, and in 4.4% of patie...

Validation of the Essen Stroke Risk Score in different subtypes of ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with LAA subtype of non-atrial fibrillation stroke, the ESRS has moderate accuracy in stratifying the risk of both recurrent strokes and major vascular events within the first year. However, the ESRS couldn't accurately stratify the risk of recurrent strokes in patients with small-artery atherosclerosis subtype of non-atrial fibrillation stroke. One-year outcomes and secondary prevention in patients after acute minor stroke: results from the China National Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Outcomes in individuals in China who had experienced acute minor stroke were unfavorable, underscoring the importance of early, sustained preventive therapy in this patient population. Combination of secondary prevention medication classes was associated with a lower risk of death. PMID: 28476094 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of higher waist circumference with milder stroke severity in acute ischaemic stroke.
DISCUSSION: Higher WC at admission is associated with milder baseline stroke severity among patients with acute ischaemic stroke. ABBREVIATIONS: BMI: body mass index; CE: cardioembolism; CI: confidence interval; LAA: large-artery atherosclerosis; NIHSS: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale; OR: odds ratio; SAO: small-artery occlusion; WC: waist circumference. Comparison of carotid atherosclerotic plaque characteristics between patients with first-time and recurrent acute ischaemic stroke using B-mode ultrasound.
CONCLUSION: Stroke recurrence is related to advanced atherosclerosis defined by carotid plaque and its characteristics. PMID: 26100248 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An analysis of the risk of perioperative ischemic stroke in patients undergoing non-cardiovascular and non-neurological surgeries.
Conclusions: History of stroke and smoking, renal insufficiency, and low HDL-C are independent risk factors for PIS. It is feasible to assess the risk of stroke in preoperative patients using PCE in clinical practice. PMID: 31903867 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Circulating granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and functional outcome after ischemic stroke: an observational study
Discussion: Early post-stroke S-GCSF is increased in severe IS and associated with 3-month poor functional outcomes. The change in S-GCSF and the 3-month S-GCSF appear to be less-important, and S-GCSF likely reflects inflammation in large infarctions.PMID:34253146 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.1948766

Persisting consequences of ischemic stroke after three months, assessed with the Stroke Impact Scale Version 3.0
CONCLUSION: There is the utmost need to focus on the long-term effects of ischemic stroke, due to the rising number of patients who live with the consequences of stroke. Stroke treatment should not be directed exclusively to acute stroke care or prevention, but also to optimizing the post-stroke functioning and Quality of life.PMID:34991437 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.2024714

Serum Bilirubin Associated with Stroke Severity and Prognosis: Preliminary Findings on Liver Function after Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSION: High Tbil and Dbil level within 48 hours of symptom onset could be an independent marker of severity of stroke on admission and discharge for all AIS patients. For patient with mild stroke, elevation of bilirubin after AIS suggests a good prognosis. These findings imply that the liver play the key roles in the mechanism of AIS.PMID:36165803 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2022.2119724
