Predictors, causes and outcome of 30-day readmission among acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Older age, stroke severity, prior stroke, diabetes, indwelling urinary catheter and admission to non-neurology floor during index admission were associated with 30-day readmission. 30-readmission after AIS increased hospitalization expenses, LOS and in-hospital mortality. Relationship between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene (A1298C) polymorphism with the risk of stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Authors: Kumar A, Sharma R, Misra S, Nath M, Kumar P Abstract Studies on relationship between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) gene A1298C polymorphism with the risk of ischemic as well as hemorrhagic stroke have shown discordant results. Present meta-analysis was aimed to clarify the relationship between MTHFR gene A1298C polymorphism with risk of stroke. A comprehensive literature search for all published articles was performed in electronic database including PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, Trip Databases, Worldwide Science, CINAHL, and Google Scholar up to 31st  December 2019. Pooled odds r...

Relationship between ischemic stroke locations, etiology subtypes, neurological outcomes, and autonomic cardiac function.
CONCLUSIONS: HRV measured after admission is related to the AIS infarction basin, TOAST subtypes, and neurological outcomes at discharge suggesting a possible role for HRV in evaluating AIS and identifying high-risk patients. PMID: 32701421 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neurological complications of COVID-19: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Considering the possibility of neurological involvement in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in earlier diagnosis and treatment; otherwise permanent, irreversible sequelae and even death may follow. More comprehensive studies may indicate that until the end of the present pandemic, young adults with unexplained and unexpected stroke as well as patients with newly diagnosed Guillain-Barré syndrome should be tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection. AST to ALT ratio and risk of hemorrhagic transformation in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher AAR was associated with an increased risk of HT after ischemic stroke. In addition, AAR might be a better biomarker for predicting HT than ALT or AST. PMID: 32697140 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of renal function on association between uric acid and prognosis in acute ischemic stroke patients with elevated systolic blood pressure.
CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that high serum uric acid concentration is associated with better prognosis in ischemic stroke patients with normal renal function, but not in those with abnormal renal function. The establishment of causality between increased uric acid levels and better stroke prognosis needs more suitably designed randomized clinical trials. Schisandrin B improves cerebral ischemia and reduces reperfusion injury in rats through TLR4/NF- κB signaling pathway inhibition.
Schisandrin B improves cerebral ischemia and reduces reperfusion injury in rats through TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway inhibition. Neurol Res. 2020 Jul 13;:1-10 Authors: Fan X, Elkin K, Shi Y, Zhang Z, Cheng Y, Gu J, Liang J, Wang C, Ji X Abstract It has been established that poor outcomes in ischemic stroke patients are associated with the post-reperfusion inflammatory response and up-regulation of TLR4. Therefore, suppression of the TLR4 signaling pathway constitutes a potential neuroprotective therapeutic strategy. Schisandrin B, a compound extracted from Schisandra chinensis, has been shown to posse...

The relationship between the platelet to leukocyte ratio and mechanical thrombectomy outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: Platelet to leukocyte ratio may be use to assess the risk of functional outcome and sICH in patients with acute anterior circulation occlusion stroke undergoing endovascular treatment in real world China. PMID: 32643590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ligustilide provides neuroprotection by promoting angiogenesis after cerebral ischemia.
CONCLUSION: LGSL promoted focal angiogenesis and attenuated ischemia-induced brain injury, suggesting that LGSL is a potential agent that improves angiogenesis and promotes recovery from ischemic stroke. PMID: 32584207 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Intracranial collaterals and arterial wall features in severe symptomatic vertebrobasilar stenosis.
CONCLUSION: Intracranial good collateral of posterior circulation may be associated with lower risk of arterial positive remodeling and culprit plaque diffuse distribution, plaque enhancement in patients with severe sIVBAS. Factors associated with medication persistence among ischemic stroke patients: a systematic review.
Conclusions: Stroke patients' medication persistence decreases over time, and persistence on antiplatelets, anticoagulants, and statin was poor. Several factors were associated with medication persistence, and these factors should be considered in future secondary preventative strategies. PMID: 32321382 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic lesions in patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease.
Conclusions: The prevalence of ECAD, ICAD and EICAD is high in patients with CAD, and the presence of these conditions is positively correlated with the extent and degree of CAD. Evaluations of ECAD and ICAD should be highly recommended for CAD patients to reduce the future risk of cardiovascular diseases. PMID: 32284016 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessment of the manifestations of atrial fibrillation in patients with acute cerebral stroke - a single-center study based on 998 patients.
Discussion: The above data should prompt neurologists, cardiologists and family doctors to try to detect AF as a risk factor for ischemic stroke which worsens patient prognosis, prolongs hospital stay and contributes to increase in mortality, especially when more effective drug treatment is currently possible. Human urinary kallidinogenase in treating acute ischemic stroke patients: analyses of pooled data from a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled phase IIb and phase III clinical trial.
Conclusion: HUK is safe and provides potential clinical benefits as a treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Further large post-marketing observational studies are needed. PMID: 32138624 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The effect of intravenous ginkgolide on clinical improvement of patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Conclusion: Intravenous ginkgolide may improve the outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Differences in effect between pre-marketing and post-marketing studies may be associated with gender, time of onset to enrollment and severity of stroke. PMID: 32048567 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
