Acute kidney injury without need for dialysis, incidence, its impact on long-term stroke survival and progression to chronic kidney disease
Conclusions We found AKI during stroke admission was associated with increased mortality as compared with those without AKI on univariate analysis. AKI without need of renal replacement therapy was also associated with progression to CKD in this cohort. This suggests that patients with AKI need to have their renal function monitored longitudinally for development of CKD.

Association of cognitive reserve with stroke outcome: a protocol for a systematic review
Introduction The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) was introduced to account for individual differences in the clinical manifestation of neurodegenerative diseases. Though several mechanisms and risk factors are shared between neurodegeneration and stroke, the effect of CR on poststroke functional outcome has been poorly addressed. This systematic review aims to synthesise the available research evidence on the association of CR with stroke outcome, in order to implement the understanding of interindividual variability in stroke outcome and to improve its prediction. Methods and analysis Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, ...

Risk factors for fear of falling in stroke patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion This meta-analysis indicated that female population, impaired balance ability, lower mobility, history of falls and walking aid in patients with stroke might be at greater risk for FoF. Future studies are recommended to determine other risk factors specific to patients with stroke.

Relationship between serum insulin-like growth factor 1 levels and ischaemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion Higher serum IGF-1 was significantly correlated with a lower risk of ischaemic stroke. In view of the high degree of heterogeneity, it may need more studies to confirm the prognostic value of serum IGF-1 levels in ischaemic stroke and explore the sources of heterogeneity.

Development of rapid and effective risk prediction models for stroke in the Chinese population: a cross-sectional study
Conclusion The five machine learning models all had good predictive and discriminatory performance for stroke. The performance of RF and XGBoost was slightly better than that of LR, which was easier to interpret and less prone to overfitting. This work provides a rapid and accurate tool for stroke risk assessment, which can help to improve the efficiency of stroke screening medical services and the management of high-risk groups.

Qualitative study exploring heterogeneity in caregiving experiences post-stroke in Singapore
Conclusion Our findings illustrated the heterogeneity in factors affecting caregiving experience across spouse and adult-child caregivers. Practical implications include conducting a needs assessment for caregiver-stroke survivor dyads and providing tailored support, training and information to help caregivers cope better.

Physio-psycho-social interaction mechanism in dyadic health of young and middle-aged stroke survivors and their spousal caregivers: a longitudinal observational study protocol
Introduction In recent years, stroke has become more common among young people. Stroke not only has a profound impact on patients’ health but also incurs stress and health threats to their caregivers, especially spousal caregivers. Moreover, the health of stroke survivors and their caregivers is interdependent. To our knowledge, no study has explored dyadic health of young and middle-aged stroke survivors and their spousal caregivers from physiological, psychological and social perspectives. Therefore, this proposed study aims to explore the mechanism of how physiological, psychological and social factors affect dyad...

Validation of diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and stroke in electronic medical records: a primary care cross-sectional study in Madrid, Spain (the e-MADVEVA Study)
Conclusion The validation results show that diagnoses of AMI and stroke in primary care EMRs constitute a helpful tool in epidemiological studies. The prevalence of AMI and stroke was lower than 2% in the population aged over 18 years.

Acupuncture for gait disturbance of patients with subacute and chronic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Hemiparetic gait is one of the most common sequelae of a stroke. Acupuncture has shown potential in correcting hemiplegic gait patterns and improving motor function recovery after stroke. However, controversial findings and a lack of supportive evidence on the effectiveness of acupuncture for post-stroke hemiplegia. The intelligent gait analysis system provides a new perspective for the study of hemiparetic gait. This systematic review aims to collect relevant studies and critically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in alleviating gait disturbance of post-stroke hemiplegia based on quantified gai...

Differences in acute ischaemic stroke in-hospital mortality across referral stroke hospitals in Spain: a retrospective, longitudinal observational study
Conclusions In the referral stroke hospitals of the Spanish National Health System, the overall adjusted in-hospital mortality decreased between 2003 and 2015. However, between-hospital variations in mortality persisted.

Perspectives of cardiac rehabilitation in patients who had a stroke: a protocol for a qualitative study review
Introduction Stroke has a high incidence and disability rate, and its recurrence and readmission rates are rising, making it the second-leading cause of mortality in the globe. Cardiac rehabilitation is a well-known, evidence-based strategy that might serve as an additional preventative programme. Prior quantitative research has proven the positive results and high practicability of cardiac rehabilitation for patients who had a stroke, however, cardiac rehabilitation is not yet a routine component of stroke rehabilitation worldwide. It might be useful to conduct meta-integration of previous qualitative studies to understan...

Incidence, characteristics and outcome of post-stroke recrudescence in the Chinese population: a single-centre observational study
Conclusions PSR is not uncommon in patients presenting with stroke symptoms and can be distinguished from TIA and SMs based on a combination of clinical features and trigger in the Chinese population. The neurological deficits of patients with PSR often resolve within several days following the resolution of the trigger.

Efficacy and safety of ginger-salt-indirect moxibustion for urge urinary incontinence after stroke: protocol for a pilot multicentre randomised controlled trial
Introduction Ginger-salt-indirect moxibustion is widely applied to treat urge urinary incontinence after stroke, which is a common complication in stroke survivors. Moxa cone moxibustion and moxa box moxibustion are the main techniques of ginger-salt-indirect moxibustion. Our previous study had shown that ginger-salt-indirect moxibustion using moxa cones was feasible and effective for urination disorders post-stroke. This pilot study aims to assess the feasibility of conducting research to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ginger-salt-indirect moxibustion for patients with post-stroke urge urinary incontinence. Methods ...

Antiepileptic drugs and the risk of ischaemic stroke and myocardial infarction: a population-based cohort study
Conclusions The use of enzyme-inducing AEDs was not associated with an increased risk of ischaemic stroke; a small increase of MI with prolonged use was observed. In contrast, use of inhibiting AEDs was associated with a decreased risk of MI.
