Diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in young patients with ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The recommended cardiac rhythm evaluation to determine the etiology of ischemic stroke (IS) is similar in all patients regardless of their age and includes an electrocardiogram and at least a 24-hour heart rhythm monitoring. However, it is known that the main causes of IS vary according to patients ’ age. There is a higher preponderance of arterial dissections and patent foramen ovale in younger patients, while atrial fibrillation (AF) is more common in older patients.

Association between electrocardiographic and echocardiographic atrial abnormalities and prognosis in cryptogenic stroke
The role of atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke (CS) is well known. However, the usefulness of left atrial (LA) electrical and morphological abnormalities to identify more disabling strokes in sinus rhythm patients is less studied. : Structural left atrial and ventricular abnormalities on the electrocardiogram (ECG) and transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) at the time of ischemic stroke have been associated with morbidity and mortality. Yet, the prognostic impact of the same in embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS), a relevant subtype of ischemic stroke with a unique pathophysiology, has not been well studied to date. Automated Continuous Electrocardiogram Monitoring Accelerates the Detection of Atrial Fibrillation after Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack on a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit
Background and Aim: Rapid and sensitive detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) is of paramount importance for initiation of adequate preventive therapy after stroke. Stroke Unit care includes continuous electrocardiogram monitoring (CEM) but the optimal exploitation of the recorded ECG traces is controversial. In this retrospective single-center study, we investigated whether an automated analysis of continuous electrocardiogram monitoring (ACEM), based on a software algorithm, accelerates the detection of AF in patients admitted to our Stroke Unit compared to the routine CEM.

Background: The diagnosis of covert atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a major challenge to guide secondary prevention of patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). Aims: We analyzed consecutive ESUS patients from 3 prospective stroke registries to assess whether the presence of supraventricular extrasystoles (SVE) on standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is associated with the detection of AF (primary outcome), stroke recurrence and death (secondary outcomes) during follow-up.

Burden of Premature Atrial Complexes and Risk of Recurrent Stroke and Death in Patients with Mild to Moderate Ischemic Stroke
Premature atrial complexes (PACs) meet increased attention as a potential intermediary between sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients with even high numbers of PACs do not fulfill current guidelines for oral anticoagulation treatment though an associated stroke risk is suspected. Objective: We aimed to determine whether a high number of PACs or runs of AF less than 30 seconds in 2-day continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) recording was associated with risk of recurrent ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) or death in a large cohort of patients with acute ischemic stroke or TIA and no prior AF.

Does the Magnitude of the Electrocardiogram QT Interval Dispersion Predict Stroke Outcome?
QT dispersion, maximal interlead difference in QT interval on 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), measures cardiac repolarization abnormalities. Data are conflicting whether QT dispersion predicts adverse outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. Our objective is to determine if QT dispersion predicts: (1) short-term clinical outcome in AIS, and (2) stroke location (insular versus noninsular cortex).

Clinical Outcome of Ischemic Stroke in Old Patients Versus Oldest-Old
Background: It is unclear whether very old patients benefit from stroke unit. The aim of our work was to compare the clinical outcome of patients with ischemic stroke aged either 70 or 80 (G 1) versus oldest-old greater than or equal to 81years (G 2). Methods: Of 1187 patients admitted with stroke during 5 years in our stroke unit, we included 252 patients with independent functional status (modified Rankin scale, [mRS] ≤ 2) before the stroke. All patients underwent clinical examination, blood test, electrocardiography, brain imaging, and cerebrovascular ultrasound.
