ASOC Osuntokun Award Lecture 2022: Partnership for stroke prevention and treatment in Africa: Qualitative research processes and findings
Africa has one of the highest rates of stroke and stroke deaths in the world. The burden of stroke is increasing with a 3-year mortality rate of up to 84%. Stroke disproportionately affects the young and middle-aged population contributing to morbidity and mortality affecting families, communities, health systems, and economic progress. My objectives of the 2022 Osuntokun Award Lecture at the African Stroke Organization Conference were to explore our qualitative research findings from our communities and to propose future qualitative methods for improving stroke outcomes in Africa.

The African Stroke Organization Conference 2021: Building Capacity, Careers, Collaborations, and Contributions
The inaugural African Stroke Organization Conference (ASOC) aimed to create a forum to discuss the latest stroke science, highlight opportunities to address the high burden of stroke in Africa, develop a viable pipeline of emerging African stroke researchers, honor leading scientists and policy makers, and provide networking avenues to bolster future collaboration. Stroke Inpatient Rehabilitation Team Conferences: Leadership and Structure Improve Patient Outcomes
Consensus on how rehabilitation teamwork and services are optimally coordinated continues to be a work in progress. One area of recent research has been inpatient-rehabilitation team conferences in stroke. The prevalence of Americans living with stroke is expected to gradually increase as the U.S. population ages, as will the related direct and indirect costs. Effective interdisciplinary team conferences during acute-stroke inpatient-rehabilitation are key to managing long-term costs while improving functional outcomes.

Family Conferences in Stroke Rehabilitation: A Literature Review
Conclusions: Much more can be done within the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the information needs of patients and families are catered for during their inpatient admission and on their return to the community. Additional research and trials of interventions by established rehabilitation services will allow for improved and more informed clinical practice (including cost effectiveness), enhanced knowledge of caregiver needs, and essentially more positive outcomes for rehabilitation patients and their families.
