Calcified amorphous tumor of the heart with mitral annular calcification: a case report
ConclusionsIn the present case, a calcified amorphous tumor arose from mitral annular calcification. A characteristic of mitral annular calcification-related calcified amorphous tumor is its highly mobile nature, with a high risk of stroke or other systemic embolism. Therefore, surgical therapy should be considered for treatment of calcified amorphous tumors.

Ischemic stroke complicating thrombolytic therapy with tenecteplase for ST elevation myocardial infarction: two case reports
ConclusionsHemorrhagic stroke is not the only complication of thrombolysis, ischemic stroke can occur even if it is an extremely rare complication. The two cases on which we report shed light on the association between fibrinolytic therapy and ischemic stroke, the pathophysiology of which is not well understood.

Pneumococcal meningitis with normal cerebrospinal biochemistry and no pneumococci at microscopy, mimicking a stroke: a case report
ConclusionsThis case emphasizes the need to consider a multidisciplinary approach and empirical meningitis treatment until diagnostic results from microbiological cultures are obtained.

Dissection of the internal carotid artery and stroke after mandibular fractures: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionsCarotid artery dissection is a rare but life-threatening condition that can develop after trauma to the head and neck. There should be a high index of suspicion in patients with a mechanism of injury that places the internal carotid artery at risk because blunt vascular injury may show delayed onset with no initial symptoms of vascular damage. By implementing an algorithm for early detection and treatment of these injuries, serious brain damage may be avoided.

Brain tuberculoma, an unusual cause of stroke in a child with trisomy 21: a case report
ConclusionsPatients with trisomy 21 have an increased risk for stroke. Our patient had an exceptional case of stroke caused by tuberculoma. The present case emphasizes the need to consider tuberculomas in the differential diagnosis of children with neurological symptoms living in areas of high tuberculosis incidence.

Acute symptomatic peri-lead edema 33  hours after deep brain stimulation surgery: a case report
ConclusionsWe document a thorough radiographic time course showing the evolution of these peri-lead changes and their regression with steroid therapy, and discuss the therapeutic implications of these findings. We propose that the unilateral peri-lead edema after bilateral deep brain stimulation is the result of severe microtrauma with blood –brain barrier disruption. Knowledge of such early manifestation of peri-lead edema after deep brain stimulation is critical for ruling out stroke and infection and preventing unnecessary diagnostic testing or hardware removal in this rare patient population.

Rivaroxaban as an effective alternative to warfarin in a patient with atrial fibrillation, thrombophilia, and left atrial appendage thrombus: a case report
ConclusionsThis case raises the issue of the ineffectiveness of warfarin therapy in complex cases involving particular thrombophilic conditions and the possibility of using rivaroxaban as a safe and effective alternative.

Papillary fibroelastoma of the aortic valve presenting with chronic angina and acute stroke: a case report
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report describing a patient with a cardiac papillary fibroelastoma who presented with both chronic angina and acute stroke.

Decompressive craniectomy for malignant middle cerebral artery infarction in a 16-year old boy: a case report
ConclusionsThis case highlights the preponderance of cryptogenic stroke in younger patients and its etiological elusiveness. It further demonstrates that age is predictive in terms of survival and functional outcome in the context of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction.

Successful thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator after antagonizing dabigatran by idarucizumab: a case report
ConclusionsApplying a recombinant tissue plasminogen activator after antagonizing dabigatran with idarucizumab is feasible and easy to manage in an emergency room or stroke unit. Thus, idarucizumab represents a new therapeutic option for patients receiving dabigatran treatment, reestablishing their eligibility for recombinant tissue plasminogen activator thrombolysis.

Biatrial thrombi resembling myxoma regressed after prolonged anticoagulation in a patient with mitral stenosis: a case report
ConclusionsNoninvasive characterization of cardiac mass is essential in clarifying the diagnosis and directing treatment strategy. Anticoagulation is a feasible treatment when the clinical assessment, risk factors, and imaging findings indicate a diagnosis of thrombi. After prolonged anticoagulation therapy, complete resolution of biatrial thrombi was achievable in our case.

Acute renal infarction and cardioembolic stroke in a patient with atrial fibrillation and hyperthyroid-induced cardiomyopathy: a case report
Conclusion A high index of suspicion of acute renal infarction is required in patients with risk factors of thrombosis presenting sudden onset flank pain.

Headache and transient visual loss as the only presenting symptoms of vertebral artery dissection: a case report
Conclusions We describe an atypical case of vertebral artery dissection presenting with sudden transient visual disturbance without neurological signs in an otherwise healthy man. This is a rare but potentially fatal condition that can result in thromboembolic infarction. A high index of suspicion is crucial to make an early diagnosis and avoid devastating neurological outcomes.

Multidisciplinary approach and anesthetic management of a surgical cancer patient with methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency: a case report and review of the literature
Conclusions Neoplastic disease and related surgery followed by the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs alter the hemostatic balance in cancer patients. Those suspected of also having a thrombophilic disease require a thorough laboratory diagnostic workup, including a molecular analysis aimed at identifying the genetic mutation responsible for the hyperhomocysteinemia, as indicated. The case described in this report highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that includes expertise in peri-operative anesthesia, surgery, oncology, and hematology.

Persistent hypoxemia and platypnea-orthodeoxia after left single-lung transplantation: a case report
Conclusions Our case demonstrates that an open patent foramen ovale leading to massive right-to-left shunting is a possible complication after lung transplant, with significant morbidity, and that it can be treated successfully using a percutaneously placed occlusion device. Through this case report, we aim to improve pre-transplant procedures by demonstrating that a bubble contrast transesophageal echocardiogram can be performed pre-operatively to detect a patent foramen ovale.
