Comparative study of on-label versus off-label treatment of intracranial aneurysms with the Pipeline embolization device
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world practice, off-label use of PED is common and can achieve similar efficacy as on-label use. However, in aggregate, off-label use was found to carry an increased rate of ischemic complications. With judicious attention to safety and individual patient characteristics, these results highlight the scale and general feasibility of off-label PED use by experts.PMID:35090133 | DOI:10.3171/2021.11.JNS212481

Creation of a comprehensive training and career development approach to increase the number of neurosurgeons supported by National Institutes of Health funding.
CONCLUSIONS: Targeted research education and career development programs initiated by the NINDS led to a rapid and dramatic increase in the number of NIH-funded neurosurgeon-scientists and total NIH neurosurgery department funding. PMID: 32764178 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics and career outcomes of Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation research fellowship recipients.
CONCLUSIONSThe majority of AANS/NREF research award recipients enter academics as fellowship-trained neurosurgeons, with approximately one-third obtaining NIH funding. Analysis of this unique cohort allows for identification of characteristics of academic success. PMID: 30738408 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Performing concurrent operations in academic vascular neurosurgery does not affect patient outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS Overall, there was a significant difference in the types of concurrent versus nonconcurrent cases, with more routine/elective cases for less sick patients scheduled in an overlapping fashion. After adjusting for patient demographics, procedure type, and clinical indicators, concurrent cases had longer procedure times, but equivalent patient outcomes, as compared with nonconcurrent vascular neurosurgical procedures. Academic impact and rankings of neuroendovascular fellowship programs across the United States.
CONCLUSIONS The departmental h index and analysis of its publication topics can be used to calculate the h index of an associated subspecialty. The analysis was focused on the neuroendovascular specialty, and this methodology can be extended to other neurosurgical subspecialties. Individual faculty research interest is directly reflected in the research productivity of a department. High-productivity centers had significantly more faculty with significantly higher individual h indices. The current systems for neuroendovascular fellowship program accreditation do not have a meaningful impact on academic productivity. P...

Bradford's law: identification of the core journals for neurosurgery and its subspecialties.
CONCLUSIONS Bradford's law can be used to identify the core journals of neurosurgery and its subspecialties. The core journals vary for each neurosurgical subspecialty, but Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery are among the core journals for each neurosurgical subspecialty. 64-detector CT angiography within 24 hours after carotid endarterectomy and correlation with postoperative stroke.
CONCLUSIONS CTA within 24 hours of CEA demonstrates characteristic anatomical findings. CCA step-offs and ECA flaps are relatively common and clinically insignificant, whereas ICA/CCA flaps and thrombi are less frequently seen and are associated with postoperative stroke/TIA.
