Frequency of Patent Foramen Ovale and Migraine in Patients With Cryptogenic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—In patients with cryptogenic stroke who have migraine, there is a high prevalence (79%) of PFO with right-to-left shunt. The timing of the stroke in migraineurs is usually not related to a migraine attack. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the mechanism of stroke in migraineurs is most likely because of a paradoxical embolus. Future cryptogenic stroke classification schemes should consider including PFO as a separate etiologic category.

Infections and Risk of Peripartum Stroke During Delivery Admissions Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Infections present on admission increased stroke risk during delivery admissions in women with and without hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The results were driven by genitourinary infections and sepsis. Infections may be an underrecognized precipitant of peripartum stroke.

Prevalence of Poststroke Neurocognitive Disorders Using National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke-Canadian Stroke Network, VASCOG Criteria (Vascular Behavioral and Cognitive Disorders), and Optimized Criteria of Cognitive Deficit Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study is the first to have optimized the operationalization of the criterion for poststroke cognitive impairment. It documented the prevalence of poststroke NCD in the GRECOG-VASC cohort and showed that mild cognitive impairment accounts for 80% of the affected patients. Long-Term Risk of Hemorrhagic Stroke in Young Patients With Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—The relative risk of hemorrhagic stroke among children and young adults with CHD was almost 8× higher than that of matched controls from the general population, although the absolute risk was low. The highest risk of ICH and SAH occurred in patients with severe nonconotruncal defects and coarctation of the aorta.

Impact of Smoking on Clinical Outcome and Recanalization After Intravenous Thrombolysis for Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Our study suggests that good outcome in smokers is mainly related to differences in baseline characteristics and not to biological effects of smoking. The higher recanalization rates in smokers, however, call for further studies.

Long-Term Morphological Changes of Symptomatic Lacunar Infarcts and Surrounding White Matter on Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Half of the sporadic symptomatic lacunar infarcts developed secondary changes in superior and inferior white matter. These white matter hyperintensity caps and tracks may reflect another aspect of cerebral small vessel-related disease progression. The clinical and prognostic values remain to be determined.

Cerebrovascular Accidents During Mechanical Circulatory Support Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients on LVAD support. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease increases the risk of ischemic stroke, whereas dialysis may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Although any stroke increases mortality, post-LVAD hemorrhagic stroke was associated with higher mortality compared with ischemic stroke.
