Isolated Tricuspid Operations: Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Isolated tricuspid repair was associated with lower adjusted mortality and morbidities than replacement. Beating heart operation was associated with lower adjusted major morbidities. Pre-operative MELD scores may identify high-risk patients, and referral to higher volume centers may help improve outcomes.PMID:36696939 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.12.041

Sixth Annual Pediatric Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support (Pedimacs) Report
CONCLUSIONS: This Sixth Pedimacs Report demonstrates the continued evolution of the pediatric field. The complexity of cardiac physiologies and anatomical constraint mandates the need for multiple types of devices utilized (PC, PP, IC). Detailed analyses of each device type in this report provide valuable information to further advance the care of this challenging and vulnerable population.PMID:36402175 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.10.042

Transapical Ventricular Remodeling for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with Systolic Cavity Obliteration
CONCLUSIONS: Transapical myectomy to enlarge LV cavity volume can be performed safely with good early survival and functional results. This procedure is an important alternative to cardiac transplantation for HCM patients with systolic cavity obliteration and progressive heart failure.PMID:35339438 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.02.073

Twelfth Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support Report: Readmissions after LVAD
Ann Thorac Surg. 2022 Jan 7:S0003-4975(22)00007-8. doi: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe twelfth annual report from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (Intermacs) highlights outcomes for 26,688 continuous-flow LVAD patients over the past decade (2011-2020). In 2020, we observed the largest drop in yearly LVAD implant volumes since the registry's inception, which reflects the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac surgical volumes in the United States. The 2018 heart transplant allocation policy change in the U.S. ...

Mid-Term Outcomes of Heart Transplantation in Children with Genetic Disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Despite more preoperative comorbidities, mid-term outcomes following heart transplant in children with genetic syndromes and disorders are promising.PMID:35007503 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.019

Competing Risks to Transplant in Bridging with Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
CONCLUSIONS: While device related-complications were significantly associated with decreased rates of transplant, CF-LVAD patients had excellent waitlist outcomes overall. In light of the 2018 allocation score change, the risk of complications should be taken into account when deciding whether to offer CF-LVAD as a bridge to transplant.PMID:34808111 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.09.079

Fifth Annual Pediatric Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support (Pedimacs) Report
CONCLUSIONS: This Fifth Pedimacs Report demonstrates the continued robust growth of VADs in the pediatric community, now with over 1000 patients reported to the registry. The multiple available device types (PC, PP, IC) serve different populations with different pre-VAD risk profiles, which may account for differences in survival and AE between device types.PMID:34648810 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.10.001

The Specialized Donor Care Facility (SDCF) Model and Advances in Management of Thoracic Organ Donors.
CONCLUSIONS: Lack of high-quality prospective evidence results in conflicting practices across organ procurement organizations and best practices remain controversial. Future studies should focus on prospective, randomized investigations to evaluate donor management strategies. The SDCF model fosters a collaborative environment that encourages academic inquiry and is an ideal setting for these investigations. PMID: 33421385 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
