Do Patients Understand Their Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Impact On Complications?
While considerable research exists about cardiovascular disease, there is limited data regarding patients ’ understanding of their own cardiovascular disease risk factors and cardiovascular complications. We set out to assess patients understanding of their own cardiovascular risk factors and complications of cardiovascular disease. In particular we were curious as to patients’ fears of stroke and m yocardial infarction (MI) related to recent publications regarding risks related to carotid interventions.

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials and Electroencephalography During Carotid Endarterectomy Predict Late Stroke But Not Death
Late stroke and death rates are anticipated to be higher in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA), however little is known regarding predictors. We seek to determine if dual intraoperative Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) and electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring can predict long-term strokes and death.

The Influence of Collagen Impregnation of a Knitted Dacron Patch Routinely Used in Carotid Endarterectomy
In selected populations, carotid endarterectomy (CEA) reduces long-term stroke risk. Studies have shown increased risk of restenosis with use of a collagen-impregnated Dacron patch compared to a PTFE patch. There is concern that collagen-impregnation may initiate thrombosis or increase restenosis due to platelet activation. We performed a retrospective analysis of our CEA experience with routine patching using knitted Dacron patches with (Hemashield) and without (Sauvage) collagen-impregnation.

Trends in the diagnosis and outcomes of traumatic carotid and vertebral artery dissections among Medicare beneficiaries
Early identification of carotid and vertebral artery dissections has been advocated to reduce stroke among trauma patients. We sought to characterize trends in the diagnosis of traumatic carotid and vertebral artery dissections and association changes in stroke rate among Medicare beneficiaries.

Mycotic aneurysm of the extracranial internal carotid artery - resect and ligate or reconstruct?
This report highlights a case of ECA aneurysm infection presenting with stroke and an occluded internal carotid artery, likely due to microbial arteritis on a background of osteomyelitis. Operative intervention was performed to definitively treat the infection and prevent the potential associated complications.

Mycotic Aneurysm of the Extracranial Internal Carotid Artery, Resect and Ligate or Reconstruct?
This report highlights a case of ECA-aneurysm infection presenting with stroke and an occluded internal carotid artery, likely due to microbial arteritis on a background of osteomyelitis. Operative intervention was performed to definitively treat the infection and prevent the potential associated complications.

Combined carotid endarterectomy and retrograde stenting of the supra-aortic trunk: Does cervical block offers advantages?
Atherosclerosis of the carotid artery is a major source of stroke. In some cases atherosclerosis occurs at several positions within the carotid artery. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in combination with retrograde balloon angioplasty and stenting of a brachiocephalic or common carotid artery stenosis has been described as efficacious and save procedure to prevent stroke in these cases. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of anaesthetic techniques on hemodynamic factors, operation time, duration of clamping and post-operative pain.

Carotid endarterectomy or stenting in octogenarians in a monocentric experience
Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in patients at high risk for complications from surgery. The very elderly (>or=80-year-old) are one subgroup of patients identified as being at increased risk for carotid surgery. However, there is concern that the very elderly are also at increased risk for complications of CAS. A stroke and death rate of 12% was reported in very elderly patients during the roll-in phase of Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stent Trial (CREST).
