Characterization of dysfunctional remote myocardium in left ventricular anterior aneurysms and improvements following surgical ventricular restoration using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: preliminary results
CONCLUSIONS In patients with chronic ischaemic heart disease with LV aneurysms/large areas of scar, improvements in the remote myocardial MMV and WT underline LV systolic function improvements after SVR. The persistence of myocardial WT in early diastole is the likely mechanism for incomplete or absence of relief of LV diastolic dysfunction by SVR.

Who might benefit from early aspirin after coronary artery surgery?
A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether early administration of aspirin might optimize vein graft patency. More than 250 papers were found using the reported search, of which 4 new papers in addition to the previous 7 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, journal, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes and results of these papers are tabulated. Early postoperative aspirin administered within 6 h following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been show...

Preoperative atrial fibrillation predicts mortality and morbidity after aortic valve replacement
CONCLUSIONS AF was associated with several cardiovascular and cardiac surgery risk factors, but remained independently associated with short- and long-term mortality. AF should be incorporated into cardiac surgery risk models and surgical AF ablation may be considered with AVR.

Early prosthetic valve degeneration with Mitroflow aortic valves: determination of incidence and risk factors
CONCLUSIONS There is an unexplained incidence (3.6%) of EVD resulting in explantation in some patients at 2 years after surgery. Mitroflow valves may not be suited to a younger age population.

Temporary right ventricular support following left ventricle assist device implantation: a comparison of two techniques
CONCLUSIONS Temporary support of the failing RV after LVAD implantation using temporary vein and the pulmonary artery RVAD is a promising therapeutic option. This approach provides adequate LVAD pre- and afterload and is associated with significantly less thromboembolic complications.

What is the optimal revascularization technique for isolated disease of the left anterior descending artery: minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass or percutaneous coronary intervention?
A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was, ‘What is the optimal revascularization technique for isolated disease of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) in terms of patient survival, morbidity such as myocardial infarction (MI) and need for repeat target vessel revascularization: minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass graft (MIDCAB) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)?’ Altogether 504 papers were found using the reported search, of which 13 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. Outcome param...

Does off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery have a beneficial effect on long-term mortality and morbidity compared with on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery?
A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery offered superior long-term outcomes compared with on-pump CABG surgery. Best evidence papers were considered to be those that had a follow-up period of ≥5 years, had >50 patients in either cohort, did not utilize concomitant interventions nor comprised low-risk, high-risk or sub-population groups. Where potential duplicate data sets from the same institution were likely, the more credible and recently published study was included. Two hundr...

P-119 * different measures to prevent atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing pulmonary resection for lung cancer: evidence from a comprehensive network meta-analysis of randomized and observational studies
Conclusions: Beta-blockers and flecainide are effective in reducing the incidence of postoperative AF in patients after pulmonary resections which is not the case with digoxin; data on remaining treatments are sparse and preclude drawing definite conclusions. Disclosure: No significant relationships.

P-132 * bronchial sleeve resection or pneumonectomy for non-small-cell lung cancer: a propensity matched analysis of long-term survival and quality of life
Conclusions: During the 5-year follow-up, pneumonectomy and sleeve lobectomy showed no significant differences in cancer-specific survival or in quality of life. However, thereafter sleeve lobectomy patients showed better survival. This advocates the use of sleeve lobectomy in central non-small-cell lung cancer when feasible. Disclosure: No significant relationships.

P-154 * bilobectomy for non-small-cell lung cancer: results of a multicentre study on 425 cases
Conclusions: Bilobectomy is associated with increased morbidity. Five-year survival is influenced by tumour stage and completeness of resection. Worse survival occurs in adenocarcinoma and bronchus intermedius involvement. Disclosure: No significant relationships.

Impact of coronary chronic total occlusions on long-term mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting
CONCLUSIONS Coronary CTOs are a common finding in patients referred for bypass surgery. The presence of a CTO is not independently associated with an adverse long-term outcome. While most CTOs are successfully bypassed, failure to revascularize a non-LAD CTO is not associated with adverse long-term outcome.

The impact of preoperative neurological events in patients suffering from native infective valve endocarditis
CONCLUSIONS NVE complicated by neurological events remains a challenging disease with high mortality and morbidity. Cardiac surgery seemed to be safe in the observed time interval, particularly for patients suffering from ischaemic stroke. A multidisciplinary approach is advocated for very individualized risk estimation.

Ten-year screening for thrombocytopenia after aortic valve replacement
CONCLUSIONS Thrombocytopenia and Elisa (+) are more common after AVR than after other procedures, and both were associated with increased adverse clinical outcomes. Age and lower preoperative platelet count were associated with postoperative thrombocytopenia and Elisa (+).
