Health Coaching for Secondary Prevention in TIA Clinic (P5.148)
Conclusions: Structured health coaching for improving medication adherence of secondary stroke prevention medications can be a feasible in a community based outpatient setting for high cardiovascular risk patients. We will be implementing this care pathway in 2015 at Virginia Mason in Seattle, WA to evaluate the feasibility of the intervention, and assess adoption rate by patients and providers. This is supported by NIH UL1 TR001085.Disclosure: Dr. Tai has nothing to disclose. Dr. Carter has nothing to disclose. Dr. Conley has nothing to disclose. Dr. Kalanithi has nothing to disclose. Improving Resident Performance in Acute Stroke Management Through Simulation Based Training (P5.152)
CONCLUSIONS: Simulation training is a welcome addition to traditional lecture based education with subjective and objective improvements in resident knowledge and confidence. Further study is needed to see if gains are maintained throughout the year and if patient outcomes are improved. Interdisciplinary simulation training with ER physicians and nurses may enhance teamwork during acute stroke codes.Disclosure: Dr. Johnsen has nothing to disclose. Short-Term Functional Outcome and its Predictors in a Hospital-Based Cohort of Nigerians with Acute Stroke (P5.171)
CONCLUSIONS: About 1 in 3 stroke patients in this cohort had poor functional outcome. In order to improve functional outcome and reduce the burden of stroke in Nigeria, public health education on early recognition and hospital presentation is needed. In acute stroke management, complications should be prevented while speech and language therapy should be instituted to improve functional outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Wahab has nothing to disclose. Medication Self-Administration after Stroke (P5.181)
Conclusion: Stroke patients performed poorly on the HMS, and though performance improved after medication education, this may be related to spontaneous stroke recovery. Successful Reduction of Unnecessary Indwelling Catheter Utilization in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients at a Certified Primary Stroke Center (S11.002)
CONCLUSIONS: An interdisciplinary practice strategy focused on minimizing unnecessary IUC placement in AIS patients can reduce IUC placement in these patients. At our center, this intervention also resulted shorter duration of IUC placement in the stroke unit and a lower frequency of catheter associated urinary tract infection. More widespread use of this strategy may reduce morbidity associated with acute stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Saada has nothing to disclose. Genetic Association Study of Cognitive Performance (P6.209)
CONCLUSIONS: SORL1 encodes an apolipoprotein E receptor, and influences cognitive decline. Decreased expression of SORL1 has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Our data support SNPs rs2101756 and rs985421 as possible moderators of age-related episodic memory decline. Study Supported by: NINDS R37 NS029993, Evelyn F. Body Mass Index and Stroke Subtype in a Young Adult Stroke Population (P7.126)
CONCLUSIONS: In our group of young adult stroke patients, we found the highest BMI in the group with intracranial atherosclerosis. Although this group represented a small number of patients, this young adult population is at increased risk for future strokes. It is important to educate them on lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise in addition to the treatment of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia.Disclosure: Dr. Youn has nothing to disclose. Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the REGARDS Study (P7.138)
CONCLUSIONS:Our study of unselected US hospitals showed low tPA utilization. Documented reasons for non-use were suboptimal with the lowest among patients not evaluated by a stroke team. Our sample was not limited to hospitals participating in national quality improvement programs, thus increasing generalizability. Strategies that focus on earlier hospital arrival and educating both the public and healthcare field to increase tPA utilization are urgently needed.Disclosure: Dr. Sands has nothing to disclose.
