Hydration prevents chronic hyperglycaemic patients from neurological deterioration post ‐ischaemic stroke
ConclusionsChronic hyperglycaemia was associated with the admission NIHSS score and neurological deterioration after excluding the effect of stress hyperglycaemia. Furthermore, hydration therapy may help prevent neurological deterioration.

Transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke patients with or without prior stroke
ConclusionsBoth in TIA and IS, vascular risk factors were more common in patients with a history of stroke compared with those without. In contrast to other secondary preventive medications, OAC treatment in the presence of AF was underutilized in patients with a history of stroke.

Identifying patients at risk of acute symptomatic seizure after ischemic stroke
ConclusionsBecause of low incidence and the lack of specific risk factors, acute symptomatic seizure after ischemic stroke is hard to predict. The negative effect of seizure on stroke outcome is uncertain, and more thorough studies are needed because of possible subtle or non‐overt seizures.

Cardiovascular risk factors and TIA characteristics in 19,872 Swedish TIA patients
ConclusionsThe fact that diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, and smoking are more common in TIA patients than in the general population suggests that these factors are risk factors for TIA, even if causal relations cannot be proven. The relation between increasing age and longer attacks possibly reflects an increased proportion of embolic TIAs, or impaired recovery ability. Our results also suggest a significant proportion of untreated hypertension cases in the population.

Incidence and risk conditions of ischemic stroke in older adults
ConclusionIncidence and mortality from ischemic stroke remains considerable. Apart from age and history of atherosclerosis (prior stroke or coronary artery disease), atrial fibrillation, diabetes, and smoking were the underlying conditions most strongly associated with an increased risk.

Age dependency of ischaemic stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors in western Norway: the Bergen Norwegian Stroke Cooperation Study
ConclusionThe proportion of stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors are age dependent. Age 50–74 years constitutes the period in life where cardiovascular risk factors become manifest and stroke subtypes change.

Is type 2 diabetes related to leukoaraiosis? an updated review
A significantly increased interest has been dedicated to the study of the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the brain. DM is associated with an increased risk of stroke and cognitive decline. In patients with DM, neuroimaging discloses with high‐frequency structural changes, such as cerebral atrophy, infarcts and white matter lesions, also called leukoaraiosis (LA), an expression of small vessel disease. A previous review showed a relation between DM and both cerebral atrophy and lacunar infarcts, while the question about the relation between DM and LA remained unanswered. In this review, we provide an update on data ...

Lower hazard ratio for death in women with cerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionWe evaluated HR for death comparing men to women in stroke and in each stroke subtype. Women with CH had lower HR for death within 30 days after stroke than men.

Risk factor burden predicts long‐term mortality after cerebral infarction
ConclusionIncreasing number of traditional risk factors is associated with long‐term mortality in patients with cerebral infarction, irrespective of age. Careful long‐term follow‐up is important, especially among patients with several risk factors.
