Rehabilitation service models for people with physical and/or mental disability living in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.
CONCLUSION: Models of rehabilitation care in inpatient, multidisciplinary and specialized rehabilitation units are recommended for the treatment of severe conditions with recent onset, as they reduce mortality and the need for institutionalized care, especially among elderly patients, stroke patients, or those with chronic back pain. Results are expected to be generalizable for brain/spinal cord injury and complex fractures. PMID: 29616278 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Rasch analysis of the UK Functional Assessment Measure in patients with complex disability after stroke.
CONCLUSION: The UK FIM+FAM with domain super-items satisfies expectations of the unidimensional Rasch model without the need for re-scoring. A conversion table was produced to convert the total scale scores into interval-level data based on person estimates of the Rasch model. The clinical benefits of interval-transformed scores require further evaluation. PMID: 29487943 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Upper-limb sensory impairments after stroke: Self-reported experiences of daily life and rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION: Stroke survivors perceive that sensory impairment of the upper limb has a highly negative impact on daily life, but specific rehabilitation for the upper limb is lacking. These findings imply that the clinical management of upper limb sensory impairment after stroke requires more attention. PMID: 29068038 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Skeletal muscle metabolism after stroke: A comparative study using treadmill and overground walking test.
CONCLUSION: Carbohydrate oxidation accounted for the majority of fuel oxidation at the preferred walking speed in post-stroke individuals. The increased carbohydrate utilization recorded at preferred walking speed may have influenced the physical activity profile. PMID: 28661546 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Life satisfaction in spouses of stroke survivors and control subjects: A 7-year follow-up of participants in the Sahlgrenska Academy study on ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Seven years after stroke, spouses of stroke survivors reported lower life satisfaction compared with spouses of controls. Life satisfaction in stroke survivors' spouses was associated with spouses' age, sex, giving support, and the stroke survivors' level of global disability. Establishing score equivalence of the Functional Independence Measure motor scale and the Barthel Index, utilising the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and Rasch measurement theory.
CONCLUSION: Having a Rasch interval metric to transform scores between the FIM™ motor scale and Barthel Index is valuable for monitoring functioning, meta-analysis, quality audits and hospital benchmarking. PMID: 28471470 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Influence of physician empathy on the outcome of botulinum toxin treatment for upper limb spasticity in patients with chronic stroke: A cohort study.
CONCLUSION: These findings support the hypothesis that patient-rated physician empathy may influence the outcome of botulinum toxin treatment in chronic stroke patients with upper limb spasticity as measured by Goal Attainment Scaling. PMID: 28471469 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Kinesio taping for stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study.
CONCLUSION: Stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain can experience greater reductions in Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, pain, and improvement in shoulder flexion, external, and internal rotation after 3 weeks of Kinesio taping intervention compared with sham Kinesio taping. Kinesio taping may be an alternative treatment option for stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain. PMID: 28233009 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Functional recovery after stroke in Benin: A six-month follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: The study sample showed significant functional recovery (~50%) during the first 6 months post-stroke. We recommend the integration of group-based brisk walking into a cost-effective rehabilitation programme as a suitable way to increase functional recovery of chronic stroke patients in sub-Saharan Africa after hospital discharge. Validation of the "activity and participation" component of ICF core sets for stroke patients in Japanese rehabilitation wards.
CONCLUSION: The "d" component of these 2 ICF Core Sets reflects functional status and disability and could be a valid measure in post-acute stroke patients in the rehabilitation setting. PMID: 27534858 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical relevance of the effects of reach-to-grasp training using trunk restraint in individuals with hemiparesis poststroke: A systematic review.
CONCLUSION: Trunk restraint has immediate and some long-term effects in adults with chronic stroke. However, these effects are not consistently clinically relevant when referring to minimal detectable change or minimal clinically important difference values. PMID: 27008369 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Rater experience influences reliability and validity of the brief International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Core Set for Stroke.
CONCLUSION: Clinical experience in post-stroke rehabilitation enhances inter-rater reliability of ICF assessment. Know-ledge of patient's functional capability, such as conducting common clinical tests in post-stroke rehabilitation, is useful for improving assessment validity. Discharge home after acute stroke: Differences between older and younger patients.
CONCLUSION: The presence of a spouse is an additional important factor determining discharge home in older stroke patients. It is important to monitor and support informal caregivers in order to provide appropriate care for older community-dwelling stroke patients. PMID: 26667264 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Concepts of capacity and performance in assessment of functioning amongst stroke survivors: A comparison of the Functional Independence Measure and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.
CONCLUSION: Even though the FIM and an ICF-based scale may describe limitation of functioning of stroke survivors similarly, ICF is probably more comprehensive in describing both capacity and performance. PMID: 25958887 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
