Do Commonly Used Functional Outcome Measures Capture Activities that Are Relevant for People with Stroke in India?
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cultural validity of five frequently used stroke-specific FOMs by comparing their contents with the problems reported by patients with stroke in India. METHODS: Face-to-face structured interviews were conducted with 152 patients diagnosed with stroke in India. Problems and goals identified by the patients were compared to each item included in the FOMs used in stroke rehabilitation. RESULTS: The Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) and the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI) include items related to the most frequently identified problems. However, neither covers problems related to the n...

Substantial Progress Yet Significant Opportunity for Improvement in Stroke Care in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Adherence to stroke performance metrics has increased over time, but significant opportunities remain for further improvement. Continuous stroke quality improvement program should be developed as a national priority in China.

Aortic Valve Calcification and Risk of Stroke Brief Report
Conclusions—Although AVC is a common finding in middle-aged and elderly community-dwelling people, our results suggest that AVC is not associated with an increased risk of stroke.

Intravenous Thrombolysis in Unknown-Onset Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Our data suggest no excess risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage but increased mortality and reduced favorable outcome in patients with UKO stroke compared with patients treated within the approved time window.

Caregiver-proxy reliability of the Igbo-culture adapted Maleka Stroke Community Reintegration Measure: a validation study.
CONCLUSION: The I-MSCRIM has acceptable caregiver-proxy reliability among Igbo stroke survivors in South-East Nigeria. This suggests that primary informal caregivers of stroke survivors can reliably estimate the CR of their care recipients when I-MSCRIM is administered to them. This will be useful when a stroke survivor cannot respond to I-MSCRIM. PMID: 28361604 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Socioeconomic Status and the Risk of Stroke Recurrence Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Despite a declining risk of stroke recurrence over time, the differences in recurrence risk between different socioeconomic groups remained at a similar level in Sweden during 2001 to 2012.

XBP1 (X-Box-Binding Protein-1)-Dependent O-GlcNAcylation Is Neuroprotective in Ischemic Stroke in Young Mice and Its Impairment in Aged Mice Is Rescued by Thiamet-G Basic Sciences
Conclusions—Our study indicates a critical role for the IRE1/XBP1 unfolded protein response branch in stroke outcome. O-GlcNAcylation is a prosurvival pathway that is activated in the stroke penumbra in young mice but impaired in aged mice. Boosting prosurvival pathways to counterbalance the age-related decline in the brain’s self-healing capacity could be a promising strategy to improve ischemic stroke outcome in aged brains.

Confounding by Pre-Morbid Functional Status in Studies of Apparent Sex Differences in Severity and Outcome of Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—We found no evidence of a worse outcome of stroke in women when adjusting for age and pre-morbid mRS. Failure to account for sex differences in pre-morbid handicap could explain contradictory findings in previous studies. Properties of the mRS may also contribute to these inconsistencies.

Burden of Intracranial Atherosclerosis Is Associated With Long-Term Vascular Outcome in Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—ICAS burden was independently associated with the risk of subsequent composite vascular outcome in patients with ischemic stroke. These findings suggest that ICAS burden can reflect the risk of long-term vascular outcome.

Investigating cognitive ability and self-reported driving performance of post-stroke adults in a driving simulator.
Conclusion This study suggests that post-stroke drivers may be aware of their deficits and adjust their driving behavior. Furthermore, using self-performance measures alongside a driving simulator and cognitive assessments may provide complementary fitness-to-drive assessments, as well as rehabilitation tools during post-stroke recovery. Patient reported outcomes of hand function three years after stroke.
CONCLUSION: Patients can perceive limitations on several domains with respect to hand function 2-5 years after stroke. Problems related to the appearance of the hand and satisfaction with hand function can be relevant and should be considered accordingly. Persistent hand problems after stroke are related to a more severe, supratentorial stroke in lower educated patients. PMID: 29025365 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
