MIND diet may slow cognitive decline in stroke survivors
(Rush University Medical Center) A diet created by researchers at Rush University Medical Center may help substantially slow cognitive decline in stroke survivors, according to preliminary research presented on Jan. 25, at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2018 in Los Angeles. The finding are significant because stroke survivors are twice as likely to develop dementia compared to the general population.

Comparing mechanical clot removal and standard medical therapy for severe stroke
(Georgetown University Medical Center) Results of the first randomized controlled study to evaluate a procedure that removes blood clots in the brain from patients experiencing severe strokes will be presented at the International Stroke Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Feb. 8. Clot-retrieval devices failed to improve stroke-related disability
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) A stroke survivor's chances of living independently after 90 days are not improved by the use of devices inserted into the artery to dissolve or remove a stroke-causing clot shortly after the onset of symptoms, according to a controlled trial.The study, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, will be presented at the International Stroke Conference 2013 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and published online Feb. 7 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
