Thrombus in transit through a patent foramen ovale: An unusual cause of cardiac embolism
Publication date: Available online 13 December 2019Source: Journal of the Saudi Heart AssociationAuthor(s): Carlos Minguito-Carazo, Tomás Benito-González, Julio Cesar Echarte-Morales, Mario Castaño-Ruiz, Felipe Fernández-VázquezAbstractA 78-year-old woman with a history of transient ischemic attack was admitted for sudden aphasia. In order to assess the potential cardioembolic source an echocardiogram was performed, which revealed a large mass consistent with a thrombus in transit through a patent foramen ovale. Because of the high risk of systemic embolism, emergent surgical thrombectomy was performed with the intent...

Left and right ventricular speckle tracking study before and after percutaneous atrial septal defect closure in children
ConclusionBy using 4D STE, the LV GLS was significantly improved; in contrast, by 2D STE, the RV volume overload decreased and the RV GLS was improved on short term after transcatheter ASD secundum closure in children.

Left and right ventricular speckle tracking study before and after Percutaneous ASD closure in children
ConclusionBy using 4D speckle tracking echocardiography, the left ventricular global longitudinal strain was significantly improved, on the other hand, by 2D speckle tracking echocardiography the right ventricular volume overload decreased and the global longitudinal strain was improved on short term after transcatheter ASD secudum closure in children.

Appropriateness of dabigatran dosing in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF): A retrospective study conducted in a tertiary care university hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia
ConclusionThis study revealed inappropriate prescription of reduced doses of dabigatran in a large number of patients. Age was identified as the main driving factor for underdosing. Physicians’ and pharmacists’ awareness regarding this type of high-risk medication should be improved to ensure appropriate and safe use of this commonly used drug.

Safety and feasibility of returning patients immediately to their originating hospitals after primary percutaneous coronary intervention
ConclusionThe immediate return of low risk STEMI patients to their originating hospitals after PPCI is safe and feasible and is effective strategy to provide this prefer and effective re-perfusion therapy to vast majority of patients with STEMI.

Clinical characteristics and outcome of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in the Saudi population – A single cardiac center experience
ConclusionThe HCM population in our Center is young, predominantly male with largely reverse curvatum morphology and mitral regurgitation observed in half of the cases. A country-wide registry is warranted to further explore HCM phenotypes in the Saudi population.

Baseline characteristics, management practices, and long-term outcomes among patients with first presentation acute myocardial infarction in the Second Gulf Registry of Acute Coronary Events (Gulf RACE-II)
ConclusionsFirst presentation AMI patients tend to be older and to have lower rates of risk factors. Adverse clinical outcomes such as congestive heart failure, reinfarction, cardiogenic shock, and stroke were higher among patients with first presentation AMI compared to patients with a history of ACS.

Value of three-dimensional echocardiography study of left ventricle function correlated to coronary arterial dominance in predicting the outcome of primary percutaneous coronary intervention
ConclusionIn patients with STEMI treated with primary PCI, left coronary artery dominance confers a higher risk of various adverse clinical events after primary PCI, during hospital stay, and at 3 months follow-up compared to right and balanced coronary artery dominance.

An unusual etiology of ischemic stroke: Woven coronary artery anomaly
In this report, we present a young man with a woven right coronary artery associated with a silent myocardial infarction, inferobasal segment acinesia, an area of scarring, and cardioembolic stroke thought from the scar area. Although it is reported as a benign coronary anomaly in the literature, we should be careful especially in terms of the complications that it causes.
